DNA & pedigrees Well after seeing the scam on puppyfind, I almost hesitate to ask the question now. I was going to ask if you thought it was acceptable to post links on your website to DNA results on your dogs, or their pedigrees. But now after the puppy ad scam, this isn't a good idea. Excepting that example, would you think it would benefit future breedings or sales to post this information??? What would be the detriments?? PS--then too if someone thinks your dog might have sired their puppies, they would have the information they needed. |
Well, not sure which registry you are dealing with but, if it is the AKC, the pedigree by itself does not have all the information required by the AKC to use that dog's name to register a litter of puppies. Your AKC registration certificate has a date on it, the date the registration certificate is issued, that is unique to that dog, and that date changes when an adult dog is sold and the registration transfer is done. Every time you register a litter with the AKC, they will ask you for the date the registration certificates were issues for both parents. This proves that you are the dog's owner, or that you have the permission from the dog's owner to breed their dog with yours (as in stud service). I post pedigrees on the internet, and photos too. I try to remember to add copyright information to each photo, so that nobody can re-use my photos to advertise fake puppies. Most photo editing programs will allow you to add text to a photo, and the copyright info should be someplace it can't be easily removed from the photo without messing the photo up. But don't ever, ever post copies, scans, or photos of your registration certificates. It's sad to think people are actually stooping to the level of "identity theft" - even on dogs and puppies. As far as DNA results goes, I would have to dig one of our DNA certificates out to be 100% sure, but I think they are the same. I don't think that "certificate issued" date is on them either. Hope this helps. |
i don't think it is a good idea at all. reason being anyone can come along and still your numbers. My AKC certificate numbers are on my website and i wish they weren't but by the time I thought about someone stealing my numbers it was too late so I just left it alone. |
A lot of people just post the pedigrees with the dogs name. Like, it will say, "Ch. Moonlight Star Darling X ; Dam ; Black/Tan" and then list the other dogs on the pedigree as well (in the pedigree format) but no other information like registration numbers, etc. I wish I had an example to show, but do you kind of get what I'm saying? |
Okay, I found a site (I hope the owner doesn't mind!): http://www.sweetyorkies.com/blossom.html You could list something like that! If you want, you could make a pedigree into an image in a paint program, and add a watermark over it to deter potential scammers. |
Someone PM'd the idea of putting which Lab does your DNA on the website. There is so much theft going on. Is there any photo programs that allows you to put a copyright or watermark within it? |

thank you. i did the pedigrees online at sitstay.com but have since found more info about ceeby so I am going to re-do his. i have found all the dogs to fill in all his blanks. i think my webmaster said i could only put a four gen on my site but a five would be really nicee. that's where most of ceeby's champs are exceept the UKc ones which show up now just not in red. |
The pedigrees we are using from IBC for the Biewers has 4 or 5 generations. I am going to look at my photo programs to see about the copyrights. Since I DNA all my adults I want to post that somewhere on my website. |
Anyone can get an AKC Registration number right from the AKC site...If you do a search on the dog lookup using the dogs name you can obtain the AKC Registration number...That alone can not help someone register a litter illegally...The Issue Date is not made available! Watermarks were on our pictures and that did not do any good because our whole identity was stolen not just the pictures... ~Laura |
