How can I tell ????? I have a yorkie female that just turned 1 year old last week. I know that she is old enought o breed. She has already gone thru heat about 5 months ago, But lately she has been so cranky to the male that I have. How do you know when they get pregnant ? She has been hording all the treats in her bed. she dont want to play unless it is her idea. My yorkies have been together since he was 7 months and she was 12 weeks/ recently my husband decided he wanted a dog and got a bassetthound puppy. (yippie) they all play together fine, but sometimes I watch my male yorkie and I get the feeling he feels put out or something.. Maybe its just me. When I go to work the yorkies stay in my bedroom and the bassetthound is on the other side of the house. So I am trying to keep the yorkies in a quite time for themselves... Does anyone else out there have breeding yorkies and other dogs around too ? would this prevent them from breeding ? Please help I am lost and confused about this... |
We have a Basset too!:) My opinion is, so long as the Basset is not with the Yorkies when it is time for them to breed, I wouldn't think that it would deter them from 'being interested.' If you suspect your female is coming into heat, then I would try to keep them separated as much as possible. But not just from the Basset, from each other as well. They should only be allowed to tie under your close, watchful eye. I have to actually hold my female in place during the tie because she wants to either take off, or turn on the male. You don't want either of them to be injured during the process.:) |
Thank you for your help. I have another question. I kind of know when she is in heat. the last time she panted alot and just was not herself. So do you think that I should keep them away from eachother when she goes into heat? I know that she lets him lick her but like you said when he tried to get on top, she does turn and let him have it . How do I knwo when to hold her down ? I am new at this, this is going to be her first litter. also did your female have to have a cesearian ? the vet said she will need a ceserian ? I am kind of worried. She is about 5 1/2 lbs close to 6 lbs and she is very strong and stocky. I would think this would help her deliver ? what do you think ? |
No, my female did not have to have one. I'm confused...why would your vet think she would need one?:( |
I'm confused too ! He only saw her for her puppy shots and her 1 year check up and said you know she will have to have a ceserian. she is not small in her hip area and she is very stocky !! I dont think that she should have a problem. I know that her mom had 3 litters all 6 puppies and she never had a c/section. I think I will look for another vet in my area for her, when she gets pregnant. I wish I could find one that knows Yorkies. How many puppies has your pretty little girl had ? did it change her at all ? what about your male ? |
I would try to find a another vet/opinion BEFORE breeding her. You never want to intentionally breed a bitch if you KNOW in advance she will have problems with a free whelp. C-sections should be performed as a last resort, not planned as the method of delivery. Maybe this vet saw something you didn't...you need to make sure that your girl won't be at risk first first, not when it is too late. Finding a vet that is an absolute expert in Yorkies--not dogs, or small dogs, but actually Yorkies--would be heaven, but I wouldn't think is likely. However, you would be amazed how much you can learn from an experienced breeder. They can answer questions specific to the breed that a vet cannot. My female has had two litters thus far. The only real change with her I noticed that was lasting is she became mearly 'tolerant' of our Basset compared to being her play mate and not leaving her side before hand. As far as our male, once he was used as a stud the first time, his behavior changed greatly. Anytime one of the females was in heat, he would pant, not eat, whine, shake, mark etc. We brought another male into the house and he became 'snappy' with him. We actually have retired him as a stud, had him neutered and the problems ceased. |
Thank you for your information. That helps. I think that the vet was looking for money. (my opinion) He didnt even physically check her other than give her annual shots. I dont know how he could come to a decision without even examining her ? My female is so sweet and loving. I am glad to hear that your female didnt change much. however my male is very laid back/ not agressive/ infact when ever he has a bone or toy and my female or the bassett hound want it he moves out of the way and just goes on his way... Would be interesting to see if he changes !!!!!! Its funny you have yorkies and a bassett hound too ! my bassett hound is a male. (mahogany and white ) Very pretty, I love him but I love my babies more. Buddy is my husband's dog. |
Our Basset (Flash) belongs to my daughter. She is tri-colored and loves the kiddo more than anything!:) |
I bet that she is pretty. We had a breeding pair. mahogany/white and the female was tri-color. Buddy is the pick of the litter from our breeding pair. I had a bad attack from a big dog ( german shepard ) so I like my little babies the best. I havent posted pictures of my babies yet. Cant figure it out. But I will soon. Your babies are gorgeous ! |
Thanks.:) |
I thought you weren't supposed to breed dogs until the dam was at least 2 years old? I think one year is too young, but I'm not sure. |

Mardeline, As always I strongly vaule your opinion. How do I know when she is mentally ready to breed ? How do you know the maturity level ? My girlfriend has a female, Everyone says when she is more laid back and calm and not running around like a puppy, But her female has been having babies since she was 13 1/2 months old and she is now 2 1/2 and she outruns my puppy and plays alot harder than my female... what would be a good way of telling if she is ready ? My puppy does like to run around and play, But she also has her serious side, especially when it comes to her bed. it has to be just perfect, she will move her blanket around and around till it is perfect then she will lay down... How do I know when she is ready ???? Do you have an idea ? |

If your bitch hasn't been bred by now I wouldn't recommend it. First breeding should be between 18 months and prior to 3 years. Reason is that by 3 years of age, her bones are set. You may be taking a risk after 3 years of age. This is why you see exhibitors showing and attempting to champion their females early and you very rarely see a female yorkie being Specialed. We want to get their best breeding years in and of course we cut them down prior to whelping. Usually quit breeding them by 5 years of age. |
