DO You Supplement Your Pregnant Females Diet??? Do you supplement your pregnant females diet??? I have heard so many people who have such different ways of doing this, I thought it would be interesting to see what most YT breeders recommend. I have heard to add cottage cheese to their diet for the calcium supplement, yet some people have said the opposite and say not too feed this to them. I have found a great pregnant and nursing supplement that I really like and started using it. What are your opinions on a product that does this for them??? Here's the info on it: Designed to recreate canine milk to promote immunity, stronger joints and lean growth. Contains canine milk's bioactive proteins, micellar casein, colostrum, glucosamine and even immune factors including lactoferrin. Helps produce not just healthier puppies, but healthier, longer living adults. Feed to pregnant and nursing moms to help prevent muscle and bone mass loss. What are your prefferred methods??? |
I've read so many opinions on this....sometimes over supplimenting can be bad. What I do is I switch my females to puppy kibble and then also give them canned puppy once a day as well. I've never had any issues in doing it this way and this is what works best for me. :) |
My vet and lthers that I have asked all seem to agree that best to supppliment when momis nursing. I feed good quality puppy food while the bitch is pregnant and suppliment with cottage cheese and vitamins while nursing. My Roxie still got eclampsia when the pups were 3 weeks old but the vet said it would have been much worse if I had given calcium during pregnancy. We're now supplimenting the pups and all are doing well. |
I was told that giving too much cottage cheese and calcium while pregnant can increase the possibliities of eclampsia while nursing. Yet on the other hand some swear by it so I guess moderation is the key. I personally think over supplementing is bad. In small doses I think it has benefits as long as it doesn't overload her system causing a crash after the puppies start to nurse. I do feed puppy kibble when pregnant too. Thx for sharing your thoughts on this!!! |
I feed mine puppy food, and then the last week when the puppies' bones are developing, I added cottagcheese to her diet. While she is nursing, she gets puppy food and also come cooked chicken and cottage cheese every day and occasionally a half of a boiled egg. |
I switch mine over to puppy food while pregnant and then add cottage cheese to the diet while nursing. |
I switch to a puppy kibble while pregnant and only supplement afterward (still feeding puppy kibble as a base food). Too much calcium is not good for the pups while Mamma is pregnant. A scrambled egg (no butter or seasoning) is good once a week (although that goes for non-pregnant also). I never feed canned food. You know your female more than anyone. You'll will know when she is being drawn from and needs supplemented. There is an awesome "post whelping recipe" on here if you use the search engine. I even give this as a small treat once I have a batch mixed up for my other Yorkies...they all LOVE it! |
chicken livers! they are the best, cook them for 15 or 20 minutes. and mix puppy formula with canned food. |
that is what the breeder I got my baby from said, I make Autumn the chicken livers sometimes even though I am not a breeder. |
