Male for breeding I'm considering buying a male puppy. I have a seven-year old female yorkie that I adopted from a puppy mill rescue. I also have a Westie that I bought as a puppy. I love both breeds. My nephew has a six month old female AKC Yorkie and I would love to provide a male for him because he does plan to breed. I have a few questions first. I've always had female pets. No particular reason, it just worked out that way. Are males harder to train, housebreak etc? I will probably have him neutered after he produces one liter. My nephew's female is AKC so I assume I should buy an AKC rather than CKC right? Anything else I should look for or be made aware of that would help me in my process. The male I'm thinking about buying weighs 15 ounces and he's five weeks. Also, how old should a male be before I use him to breed? :icon5: |
i have tried to pm you with some info but it said you have chosen to not receive PM's. Do you already have your male picked out and where in kentucky are you located. |
In my experience, my boy was not any harder to train than my female. Both about the same. Sweet as a button. I think there's a lot more research that needs to be done before breeding. Once you use a male to breed, he will mark, and probably be a bit aggressive and you can't get rid of that by neutering him after one litter. You need to make sure the female your cousin has is sound and genetically appropriate for breeding. There's different ways of testing for those and your vet can give you more info on that. The breeders here can certainly give you more information but please do you research and think it out really well as it is a huge responsibility. Good luck :D |
AKC won't recognize a litter from a male unless he is over i think 7 or 9 months old but they are in their teenage years then i would wait untill the male is over a year they need time to develop fully there are a lot of things you need to know before you breed during the time you are waiting for you pup to grow please read all you can learn everything you can about breeding i am not here to judge you nor am i a breeder but i want to say there are a lot of very educated breeders here on YT that may be able to help you more. Yes you will want AKC Male if the female is AKC |
Just a few pointers for getting started. You will need to select a male that will compliment the attributes of your nephew's female. The two of you will need to make sure that they adhere to the breed standard. They will both need to undergo complete health screenings with attention to detail in the areas of all of the breed specific ailments that can befall these little guys. In addition, you need to have an extensive knowledge of the line both dogs come from. The male will need to be at least a year old before you will be able to tell if he is of a quality that should be bred, much less age restrictions before AKC will allow him to be bred. It is impossible to tell if a pup as young as the one you are considering if he will be a good candidate for stud. You may end up with just a pet. |
