A question for the experts. I just got back from the vet. The x ray showed two puppies, accordng to the vet. However he pointed out two heads, but I saw three spines. Could there be a hidden head? Also, on the two heads, one was towards the back and one twoards the front. Will the one turn yet, or will it be breech. He said they were good sized, so she might have trouble. |
That's the scary part about only having one or two. They get bigger. Keep a good eye on her while she's in labor. This is her first time and may take her a while. One of those situations where you want to give her time to stretch and do it on her own, but on the other hand, not too long. My vet said absolutely do not count spines. Just heads. She didn't explain exactly why, so I can't answer that question. |
Well that is what mine said too. I guess I should have asked him where the extra spine came from. Maybe one of the other breeders has an answer. |

I already called back once to ask him about the breech position. I don't weant to appear too stupid. :D :p Maybe someone on here has the answer. |

Posterior presentation is perfectly normal. Do not interfere too quickly. Encourage her to continue pushing. If she stops pushing and the water bag is broken and pup is more than halfway out, you may want to grasp the pup with a warm wet wash cloth and apply pressure ( don't pull) to encourage her to push the rest of the pup. If that doesn't work, then it is okay to use some KY on your goved finger and work it around the vaginal opening while applying preassure in the direction of natural birthing. A pup coming through the vaginal opening head up, is a little more to be concerned with as you'll have to gently turn the pup, with contractions, to head down position. |
for some reason i wanna say that i was told to count spines but i'm not 100% on that. perhaps since you saw three spines, one of the pups was behind another one but their heads were in the same area. wish i could get a look at the x-ray. all vets should have x-rays machines that can burn them onto a disk. we have that and its so awesome. |
You should count heads for you can get an echo image of a spine(railroad tracks as my vet says) that is what my vet said we saw 3 spines on one x-ray and only 2 pups were deliverd.Sometimes it looks like more especially when side by side, but there can always be one hiding beside the other. Our last litter it looked like 6 pups per railroad tracks but only 5 heads and we got 5 pups.x-rays are not 100% but a good diagnose of about how many you have in there. |

Jeanie, Yes, one can be hiding behind one and not be visible....no it doesn't x=ray through the puppies in front. the 3 spines can be an error in the x-ray, just as in regular film (double exposure, movement, etc) |
expect a possible surprise :D |
