Question about age Hello I am new here and I want to become a breeder , but I am not sure of a couple things :eek: , 1) at what age is too old to breed yorkies , 2) the male should be smaller then the female right 3) how long does it take for yorkies to have there puppies . I am just getting started on this so a little input would be nice nad to let everyone know that I will not start breeding untill I know the do's and donts of breeding yorkie's . Thank you for your time and your opinions . :) |

No, the male does not have to be smaller.....what should be done is buying 2 dogs that you have full knowledge of their pedigree... Both should be tested for genetic problems and STDs. Make sure each dog fits within the Yorkie Standard..... Read and study as much as you can about genetics, breeding and raising a good healthy litter before you even embark on your goal. Good Luck |
thanx OK and thank you for answering me , But another question i have is the female i want to breed is 7 years old , she is my baby and I will not breed her if she is to old , My vet said that she is healthy and there is nothing wrong with her , and If I have to I will buy a female more fit for breeding that is why I am asking about the age , tHE male I do not have yet but I am looking into a very respected breeder around here for the male . |

AKC rules state older. However, you usually retire them about 6 years of age.....sometimes sooner....7 is way to risky on the mother, you will most likely cause her problems. Vet's can determine the health, but are not experienced in breeding and whelping...... My practice is 1st know my females age, 2nd after I determine that she is still young enough, I have her and the sire vet checked for STDs before I breed. After all is checked out and before they are bred, I start in my investigation of potential pet owners, (those that have approached me for a puppy) for those puppy's I do not plan to keep.....then and only then do I breed them. |
you can learn a lot from mardelin. take her advise and experience. i have and it is amazing through learning from her and others here how you can become a reputable and responsible breeder. |
ok Thanx again and I am not oging to put my shasta at risk so I will not breed her and I will find another female , before i start breeding ... Thank you for your help and I will post again soon in here with more questions .. I am sure that this is where i want to get my advice from and that you are all trust worthy , so wish me luck on finding another female and my male. |
