One-year Health Garauntees? What Is Covered? I am just wondering what is exactly covered in the one-year health garauntee? Luxating patella? Legg-calve-Perthes disease, colapsing trachea? Liver shunt? Skin disorders, like colour dilution alopecia? Mange? There are so many. and what would be the proper compensation, if something should happen, does it have to be life threatening or what about if the pup will need medication for life, is that the breeders responsiblilty? |
Different breeders cover different things. luxating patella is sometimes covered and sometimes not as it can be caused by stress on the knees. if a puppy jumps off a chair and injures itself, that is not genetic. it is genetic in some cases. Liver shunt is always coveredd, I think, by every breeder. As far as the color dilution you mentioned, that would show up before the puppy is sold and it would not be sold. Alopecia can happen to any dog at any time same as people. Most of the things that can be cured by a vet are not covered. Also most breeders do not offer a full refund but a replacement puppy when available if your puppy should die from a genetic defect or be found unsound within a certain amount of time that the individual breeder has put in the contract. Most breeders will take every situation under consideration and may make some exceptions to their own contract. each contract is different and always spells out what is covered and what is not. The finest detail is in writing. The seller has to be protected as well as the buyer. |
It depends. There is no generic, universal health guarantee that all breeders use. That is something the breeder and buyer agree upon. Each breeder devises their own health guarantee. |
A breeder should cover, treatment on mites, coccidia, gaurdia, parasites, if found by the vet on initial visit, of 48 or 72 hours. Which shouldn't be the case if a pup has been vet checked prior to leaving the breeders home. Life threatening genetic defects are usually guaranteed from 1-5 years, dependent on the breeder....As shunt can rear it's ugly head early on or as late as 5 years ...Reputable breeders will most likely refund the money in hopes that it will assit in care and/or surgery of the pup. When drafting my contract, I put the health and welfare of the pup as my first priority. |

So basically, the 1 year guarantee is for life threatening, not something like luxating patella? I am just starting out with my first breeding coming up and I wonder how I do the 1 yr guar? If it is for life threatening, I dont see that being an issue. I was just thinking who knows, what if I do it once, decide its not for me and dont breed again? couldnt offer replacement pup. I was wondering if I could just get some ideas how everyone else did this when they were just starting out?? |

LP is not just cut & dry, if a pup has anything above a grade level 1 LP....most likely it's genetic. Now a pup may have loose knees that tighten up as they grow their muscles develope. Breeding with sound dogs, will give you the peace of mind that you can stand behind your breeding with confidence. However, there are certain tests such as Bile acids that will reveal a particular dog may not have Liver Shunt, but it doesn't tell you that it isn't a carrier. Progressive Retinal Atrophy, may appear later than 1 year of age, hence the genetic defect guarantee.... The key here is if you are not familiar with your line, have your foundation dogs tested for everything prior to breeding them. Very expensive, but in the long run very, very cheap, not only in the pocket book, but in the heartache it will save. |

That's why, guarantee's should be not in a replacement puppy (my gosh the family has already fallen in love with the dog, it may not die, but just requires surgery and medical care), so financial support would be your option here. You must realize that the money you get for those puppies, is really not yours for a year... |
contract If a breeder, and many do this..say you must return the puppy to get the refund..RUN....how unfair and mean to the buyer..and that is just what that breeder is counting on. |
