The reason for banning tail docking or ear cropping in some European Countries was not because of cruelty to animals...I need to pull up that article. However, it has been documented that there has been a higher incident of yorkies having their tail injured since the law was put into play....Yorkies tails are thinner than most breeds. It hasn't been banned here yet, but that doesn't mean it won't, but at this point if a yorkie is shown with a natural tail here, it doesn't do well....just a matter of preference. Dew Claws are another matter, left in place can cause injury, getting hung up on things, people not trimming them properly and causing them to grow into the leg. Let alone groomers injuring the dog by cutting to close. So we agree to disagree. |
Yeh, thought you might not agree, but that's ok. They were the same about showing and tail docking here too, and fought it all the way, but the RSPCA won in the end, and I'm glad. :) The same goes for dew-claws, we go on you shouldn't own a Yorkie unless......., and I for one, do all my own clipping, all my own grooming, all my own anal glands and all my own claw cutting, etc, so I never have a problem with their dew-claws, etc. I know what I am doing. Maybe this law might be ok for those who take on a Yorkie and don't do these things, I don't know, but after being brought up on a farm and seeing all sorts of things, I'm afraid it's left it's mark, and I cannot stand to see any animal suffering or having things done to it....it's like lambs tails, branding and ear tags, etc, though maybe with anaesthetic, but still don't like it. I feel the same about children and old people suffering after being a nurse ! :) I am just a softy ! "the way god made it" springs to mind. :) You should see the happy waggy dogs over here. Once it comes over there, you will see what I mean, and most don't get injured. Just different ways of doing things. ;) Better not overtake this post, ha ha, sorry ! :D |
Oh I have to agree with Mardelin regarding the dew claws. I never paid them much attention until my white Peke suffered an injury to hers...looked like someone had tried to hack the poor girl's foot off.:( And she wouldn't put her leg down for a month. After seeing them removed from our litters and the pups not so much as flinch, I can't really come up with a good reason to leave them intact. Anyway...just my opinion. A small request though, for future reference can we all try to leave the 'well over in this country' and 'you all over theres' comments at the door. I realize that the approval of certain practices differ in various countries and it can be educational to compare the two, but there is such a fine line between what can be interpreted as discussion and insulting...I have yet to see such topics end on a civil note, rather more often I've seen them cause controversy and ignite grudges.:) |
BamaFans121s I say as I feel ! It won't happen on my account - Mardelin has the utmost respect from me on any topic, as she has earned it, and to pre-judge the situation as maybe getting bad, is an over exaggeration. Yes, that might happen, but you can't tell people not to say things just in case....it might never happen ! It won't here either ! :D Everyone to their own, and agree to disagree. I was just telling people the view over here......we have a huge anti-cruelty thing over here, and so do you all, but in a different way - but both have their own merrits. No doubt there are bound to be things over here that are not good or not agreed with over with you, and I would be glad for someone to ask me about them and hear their feelings from your country about these issues. I won't be offended, just amused or interested ! :D :animal-pa Debra x x x All is good !!! |

And at no point did I ever suggest you turn your back on your beliefs. By all means, say what you feel--I was just urging everyone to take extreme caution and do so in a respectful manner so that this topic DOESN'T end up as an offensive debate. Maybe refrain from making comments like "Seems to be in America you all go the vet route for everything." But then agian, I'm sure this whole converstion is just "amussing" to you, eh? |
What a cheek ! ....(BamaFan121s) I won't deem you with an answer - all I will say is that you seem to be the only one here looking for an argument ! :thumbdown I am off to my bed ! Good wishes as always, Mardelin ! :animal-pa Debra x x x |

Funny, I posted in an attempt to STOP an budding argument and now I am the one being accused of starting one. Now THAT is funny. |
I find this whole topic of docking tails and dew claws quite interesting. I had no idea that it was actually illegal in other counties! Both of my yorkies have docked tails. I guess I just thought that they were supposed to be docked. Forgive my ignorance. I was going to get my puppies tails docked, but I think I will now ask the future owner(s) their preference. I suppose it doesn't really matter if they're docked or not, but personally I think it looks better (sorry!). I do think though that it is a tad cruel. I remember when my parents had cocker spaniel puppies many moons ago, I went with them while they got the dew claws and tails docked. I distinctly remember hearing the puppies crying while it was being done. I mean, they just snip them off, no numbing them beforehand or anything! :( I figured if I went to get my puppies done after they're born, I would have to leave the room to where I couldn't hear them since it simply breaks my heart to hear a puppy in pain. :( |
1 Attachment(s) I think we are all softies really - I could never listen to it, that's for sure, but some do get anaesthetic - still I couldn't. You are probably influenced about liking docked tails better because it's what you are used to seeing. Over here, now that it has been law for a while, you rarely see them without tails - and they are lovely when fully grown with lots of lovely flowing hair. I have some pics somewhere, but not on computer. This is the only one showing Tara's tail, though she often has it more raised than this. I love her tail - she has fabulous amounts of hair on it. :animal-pa Debra x x x x:aimeeyork |

how long after they're born are you supposed to dock tails and remove dew claws? |

3 days, however, if you have a smaller or a premie born you may want to wait up till 5 days, |

thanks! Also, last weekend, it seemed like her puppies were really active and we felt them moving a lot. This week, it seems that it has died down some. I felt one move last night, but the other side of her (which seemed really active) doesn't seem to have movement. I told my husband I was worried cuz i don't feel them moving as much. Is this normal??? |
