Stud service..?
 
How does one get into the business of offering a stud service? I'd like to use my boy for breeding purposes at some point, but I would think this is all subject to some sort of regulation? What things need to be done? Does he need to be registered with something? etc..

There are several things that should be taken into consideration.

1. Is he CKC registered
2. His pedigree
3. Does he fit the standard as described in YTCofCanada and the CKC
3. Is he free from genetic defects.
4. Has he been tested for STDs & other genetic defects and or life threatening diseases.

The above mentioned are just a few things that must be considered.

The first decision for you is...do you want a pet or a stud dog..rarely can you have both and be happy?

I was just reading this thread, and even though I don't want to breed or have a stud dog at any point. I was just kinda curious about this. Why can't a stud dog be both? Is it in the same way that a showdog is different from a pet dog?

Of course, it is possible..but having owned many studs..I find a neutered male the best of all pets. Once a male is started at breeding, he tends to mark the house...I have meet a few breeders who had clean males, but that is not the norm...
My boys were most content when they were bred at least every 3 to 4 weeks...once you turn on the switch is is not so easy to turn it off and become a laid back pet again...but if a person wants to breed, then breed, but don't dabble at the expense of your dogs.

I totally agree with Pat....My boys are both stud dogs, and though I love them, both tend do mark the territory.....a dribble here and a dribble there....both are house trained, but it doesn't prevent them from hiesting their leg, just to let every other dog know they are there and they own the house.....so, it's belly bands inbetween their going outside to potty.

Thank you yorkierose and mardelin! That makes a lot of sense. My guy is neutered and still pretty territorial (although they say it takes 30 days for the hormones to leave the body) I couldn't imagine how bad he would be if he was intact :eek:
