An unwilling female I have a 19 month old female (this is her 3rd heat) and a 3 year old male. Neither have ever been bred before (last heat we let them together but she didn't want anything to do with him) and she's on her 9th day and she still won't stand for him. He'll mount her & start thrusting but she sits down on him. I realize 2 unproven dogs aren't best for a first time mating, but I don't have access to a proven stud. Is there some way we can assist in the mating? Are some dogs just always going to be unwilling to breed? Any information/advice would be greatly appreciated :) |
I have a friend that had an older female and they purchased a male and when he was at the right age they tried to breed...but the female did the same as yours...she didn't want anything to do with him... you can try to hold and position them when he mounts and tried to guide him in...I believe there are books out there that might help you...look around... |
I had the same problem 3 months ago. I just got down & held her hinney up, encouraged him to do his thing & 4 weeks ago we had 5 beautiful babies. Once they tied up I continued to hold her to make sure she didn't hurt my male. I did this every other day til day 18. She never showed any interest even though she was definitely in heat. So give it a try & hope for the best. Good luck. |
if she is sitting down she probably is not ready. One sure way to find out is while she is standing up rub your hand lightly down her back all the way down to her tail, if she switches her tail to the side, she is ready, then you can hold and raise her up but is that tail doesn't go to the side, she is not ready, they are not all ready at nine days. |
Thanks for the replies. She didn't stand for him at all her last heat either. Not one time. So that's why I'm wondering if some females just won't be bred. I'll put them together tomorrow and see what happens. If we end up assisting them, and she's not ready - but they tie - will that harm her? Or it just won't allow a pregnancy? |
wow baby yorkies again |
breeding Some females will never accept a male without a great deal of encouragement and holding..even then they can be difficult..once there is a tie, they throw a fit and try to turn a somersault..so hold her with a tight grip. I have had to get a death grip on many and I have no idea how a large breed breeder does it... You might consider AI at the vets... Pets owners do not like to hear this...but a muzzle ( use a soft nylon type) will change some into angels..they become submissive and very easy to handle... PS..9 days is not the best day anyway...11 to 13 is more ideal for mine.. |
I also think she is early at 9 days. Day 13 will be the best for her. Not all males will AI either. So if these were my dogs, I would continue to hold them and assist. If day 13 rolls around and there still isn't a tie. Try the AI. |
Thanks for the replies everyone :) Well it looks like it didn't happen. We tried holding her for him, he'd mount her, start thrusting but they never tied. He'd just stop after a min or she'd start moving around and he'd fall off. They were together outside for awhile but I doubt they tied. And now he's seeming not interested in her. All is well though, AI was never an option as breeding wasn't that important to us. If it didn't happen - it didn't happen, no big deal. Since she wasn't receptive towards him (and wasn't her last heat either) is it safe to say she'll never be bred? I'd love a pup from them, but if there's not much chance she'll ever be receptive, I might as well just get her spayed. |
You know, I've heard that some males that are babied too much are sometimes not good performers. I wonder if this is true for females. |
Really? Never heard that, but it makes sense, I guess. They are both definitely 'babied' though, they are my pride & joys :) What do people do to make sure that doesn't happen? Any ideas? |
breeding You can not imagine the spoiled girls who were brought to me for stud service..and I might add, there is nothing wrong in spoiling, mine are spoiled. What I find is..away from "mother" bitches tend to act different. I never minded an owner staying for the breeding, IF the bitch was seasoned, but many refused to settle if the owner stayed...so I went into another room and when the tied was accomplised I took them for the owner to see if they wanted. Another breeder might be able to breed her..and who knows she might change at some point...best wishes |
I agree. I had a bitch come for stud and she was VERY spoiled. I insisted that she be left with me and she was a totally different dog without her mom. It was amazing and they had no issues tying at all. When her mom came to pick her up she was amazed at how differently her baby was acting just after 4 days with me. So they deffinately act different when they are away. |
Lol Just like kids...LOL |
Ok I have a silly question. I have no intentions of breeding my baby what so ever, and am getting her spayed. But I have read this thread and I dont understand what tying means. But if i dont ask I will never know. Just curious. |
tie When the male penetrates the bitch, the penis swells and prevents the dogs coming a part for a number of minutes...as my 6 yr once said..."Help, call 911 Gus is stuck on Pammie..." |
Ok thanks....I have seen that but never knew what it was called. I just thought they were stuck. I know its the technical term.....but I always just say the female or mom. I would never let anyone call my baby a bitch. Seems so harsh. |

My mentor's son witnessed a bitch entice a nuetered male into the mating game....Her son yelled mommie, mommie, come here Tinker and Budro were dancing and now Budro is broke. |
bitch The title of "bitch" is saved for a very special group...they are golden, precious, deserve the best of the best...nothing is too good for them..by any other name, a rose is still a rose...I do understand pet lovers not caring for the term..I think it is a badge of honor... |
my little girl always says.....mommy, their stuck again. she is 4. and she always laughs when kirby mounts then jumps off and he is still doing the "air hump".. she will fall on the floor laughing at this. |

I do have a question though, I have never seen a female in heat as everyone I know that has a bitch has had them spayed. Do they make a mess? Like a human menstruation? How do you know they are in heat? I had never thought about that until yesterday that I say sanitary napkins for dogs. |
a rose It is best to spay and prevent all sorts of inconveniences and potential problems...some are clean, others a big mess.. Shakespear said it better..I have my own version..LOL Juliet said to Romeo... What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet... So, I would say he was telling us a rose can be called "stink weed" and it will still smell like a rose..that is a Yorkie bitch call her what you may, she is still a treasure. |
Nice. Couldn't have said it better myself. |
