First timer.... Our little girl is due any day, any advice on how to tell if the time is getting near? We're not to sure on the date of conception so we're trying to guess. And the vet said she could go early.. So we would like to know if there are any signs that we should look for in the days leading up to birth.... Thanks... |

I suggest that you do some research on the web for dog breeding. |

I was trying to be short and sweet......but, you said it all for me. Thanks |
http://hometown.aol.com/mayassites/whelping.html http://www.debbiejensen.com/ The above are a couple of links.. But I can honestly say I have never had one whelping that fits any of these to a T! |
I am trying to be prepared, this is my first time and I do know some things, however I am no expert. I really didn't ask for criticism I was merely asking a question, as I am very excited and anxiously awaiting the puppies arrival. Thanks for help....... |

The above link is a VERY helpful one also! I would take every bit of this as HELPFUL CRITICISM! You are dealing with the life of a helpless animal that depends on you! |
I'm happy to hear you're so happy. I'm sure you did your homework, but with the first litter everything is nerve wracking, and you want to be sure you're doing everything you can. When I bred pits the girls would start moving around in a figity way, and right before they started they would would have a discharge. Don't be scared if it's green, as everything is ok. Also, they will start to have heavy panty. I always put a small bowl of water out when they start just in case they need a drink. Hope this helped, and best wishes. |
breeding Go to the vet and have an xray...get an emergancy number, prepare a whelping box, take her temp AM and PM..when it drops around 98/99 she will msotly likely whelp in 24 hrs...read all yu can while you can..good luck |
I will agree with the others here and what they have said, but to answer your question. Make sure that you already have her a whelping box in a quiet location. Take her temp daily...several times daily...a drop and constant in her temp will be a good indication that labor will begin soon. Also, she may either want to stay right by your side, or distant...depending on the bitch, I have seen both. Look for her to begin 'nesting' and wanting to stay near her spot or she may be seeking another 'spot' like a closet or under your bed. Also, a sudden loss of appetite is a indicator as well (but doesn't ALWAYS) occur. And by all mean, do have an emergency number for an after hours vet handy...call and alert them now that you may be needing their services and what their procedures are should the case arise. Do as much research as you can between now and then. Good luck and keep us posted! |
