Trouble Mating I have two Yorkshire Terriers that are 10 and 9 months old. My female dog is in heat for the first time and my family wants to breed them. My male is going crazy and is mounting her every chance he gets. The problem is that they aren't "locking" or "tieing". What can I do to get them to lock or tie? |
Your babies are too young!!!! Your not suposed to breed your girl until her 2nd heat at the soonest. Its way too early. Lots could happen with her being so young. Please reconcider. She needs time to grow, she's still a baby. If you have questions, I'd gladly answer anything you may need to know. You can PM me anytime ! Good luck and WELCOME to YT ! |
I would suspect that it may very well have to do with the fact that they are a bit too young to be bred at this point. You should wait until they are both older...especially in the case of your female. Breeding before she is fully matured is only asking for some serious issues. In addition to not being fully matured adults, they are not yet at an age where you can even determine if they SHOULD be bred. My advice would be to wait until the next heat, examine if they represent good breeding stock, and then try again.:) And welcome to YT!:) |

What are you thinking of anyway????????? You trying to kill that female Yorkie??????? Breeding her on her first heat is totally irresponsible!!!!!! I don't know why people don't do their studies on dogs and breeding before undertaking such an expensive and dangerous undertaking. Get her spayed and him neutered. Please read this: http://www.itb.it/canaan/icdca/Breeder./facts.htm |

Mating Well...my family and I are just letting them mate naturally. We aren't forcing them to mate when they're too young because we want to sell the puppies or anything like that. We would keep the puppies as pets. I was just wondering if there was something wrong with the girl or boy because they aren't locking or tieing. If they aren't locking because they are to young, then we'll wait when they get older. Thanks for all your help. :) |

Please keep them seperated....you are going to kill your female.....if you allow this breeding to take place.....remember they do not have to have a tie for her to concieve. |

By the way you do not let toy dogs mate naturally.....you are going to definately have one or the other seriously hurt. |

Look at it this way, there is so much good information you can get from this site and the people here who have been through whelps countless times, when and if you do decide it is the right time for them, you have the opportunity to be so much more prepared.:) You definately won't be sorry you took the time to reasearch first. |
Please listen to Mardelin . She has helped me. You do not want to chance losing your female. It CAN happen. I almost lost one before for other reasons, but it CAN happen. Please keep them seperated!!! |
breeding Just because a bitch comes into season as young as yours, does not mean they should be bred...owning animals is a responsibility..dogs depend on us to do what is best for them. Contact a vet and prepare for a litter, they will probably figure it out at some point, most do. Since you are dterminend to breed your young bitch, please learn all you can to help her and the potential litter to survive. |
A 9 or 10 month bitch is way too young to be a mommy. At nine months, they are the equivalent of a 12 year old child. Please keep them separated and wait at least until she's twice her age. |
Just because a girl has a period doesn't mean you want her to have sex and get pregnant, right? Same with puppies. Your female is just a baby. Please listen to these ladies - they know what they're talking about. Best Wishes! |
I see you're pretty new to YT, and you may not be familar with the Private Message area and I sent you one. My phone number is on it, I'd love for you to use it. Mary |
Mating I understand. Thank you everyone for all of your advice. Hopefully, it isn't to late to seperate them and wait for her next heat cycle or even later. :) |
I agree....they are too young ! Are you prepared to risk your dogs getting hurt when they are still merely puppies themselves ? I bet not ! There is always risk, but these are only puppies yet. YOU HAVE GOT A BIT TOO EXCITED A BIT TOO SOON ! Read on and I will share the few things I have learnt so far..... If you didn't realise, then please listen to everyone else who replies.....wait until they are 18 months at least, to give them a better chance to be mature enough to cope with the mating process and the pregnancy and birth. Your male will have a much better idea of what he is doing, and your female will be more willing to be mated. Read as many books as you can, and look into the pros and cons if your dogs are related....your breeder could help you with these questions. Please read all my other posts as I have been talking a lot about breeding in the last few days - and I am still learning too - so you don't need to worry about me trying to put you off....JUST WAIT ANOTHER YEAR....it will make all the difference to the health and well-being of your beloved dogs and their puppies. If you are too late, and she is pregnant - and they don't need to tie - then give them very good vet care and ask the vet what you can do to help the poor young female to cope with a pregnancy when she is no more than a pup herself. (Unless you can literally keep them from eachother during her inbetween seasons, then get him neutered now. You can always pay for a stud. You can only breed her once a year from the age of 18 months-2yrs, no more than 5 litters in her lifetime, though I would say no more than two, and she has to be less than 5 years old.) If you want to keep him intact, then get her neutered if they are to be together and you have had your pups. Be very careful the male doesn't get damaged, as they can very easily end up with internal damage if they are not carefully watched while mating. I am not trying to scare you, but my male is 4 years old and has mated my 3 year old for their first time five weeks ago, and believe me it is very scary when they have a slip tie, or try to pull away when they are not ready through inexperience. My male, despite me holding them both, dragged his bits out of the female and there was blood everywhere. He is fine, and not bruised or torn. The bleeding stopped straight away. His manhood was just stretched into a long piece of trapped skin for a second which caused the bleeding. Both dogs were wanting to do it again, but I have kept them apart. If I hadn't been there, then serious injury could have been done to the male. Just a wee thing to watch for if you didn't already know. Also, they should ideally be mated once, and then again 48 hours later - that should be enough. We all have to learn somewhere ! I AM STILL LEARNING TOO. ;) I've got all my info so far from books and breeder friends. :clapsmile VERY GOOD LUCK TO YOU......read my other posts ! DEBRA :animal-pa |
Well all, we can only hope she listened and does the right thing..... |
:warning: p.s. Just thought, you are probably well in time to get your female an injection to end any pregnancy.....get her to the Vet straight away ! All is not lost yet ! Good luck on when you do breed her later on - if you ever do decide to mate her when she is older. ;) DEBRA |
