Weaning Question
 
My Yorkie puppies are eating solid food, but Mom still wants to nurse them each night about 11:00. I have read where it is best to let Mom wean the puppies, however, is there an age where she should be just seperated from them? They are 8 weeks old. Thanks so much for your response. Susan

This is what I do, I start seperating them around 3-4 weeks, by then moms usually dying for more time away. I see her sitting at opposite ends of the expen and trying to get out more. I bring her into the expen for feedings and we start weaning. By six weeks their weaned completely and yes seperated.

What do you mean by "mom still wants to nurse them"? Are you sure she doesn't just want to check on them and lick them, etc.? After I have totally weaned my pups (usually by 5 weeks), I put a onesie (that human babies wear) on mom and let her tend to the pups throughout the day, but the pups do not nurse. She just cleans them and such.

Just a thought. Eight weeks seems a little old to still be nursing, even if it's just once a day.

I let mom nurse them as long as she wants. When she starts letting them know its over I separate them. My litters routinely nurse until 8 weeks, especially the small puppies. Its not uncommon for a mother to selectively chose one puppy to nurse longer either. It seems to be a natural instinct. I have a very small female, that just stopped nursing. She is 9 weeks old. Of course she wasnt nursing like she was, but a couple times a day.

I let mom set the pace. The one thing I do is put her in with them at night, to drain her. If breasts become engorged with milk, her boosums can blow out. Most of the time she's completely done with them by week 9 or 10. Then I seperate her from them at night. Most of the time, the way she stops them from nursing is by laying on her stomach....Nature is wonderful as they get older, the consistency of mom's milk changes and the pups begin to eat more solid food.

Wow. I'm learning something new every day. With Gracie's and Angel's first litters, they were DONE with the pups by 4 1/2 weeks, in that they would beg to get out of the pen. They would go in long enough to lick, clean, etc., but then they would bark and cry to get out as soon as the pups began nursing. I assumed it was because they were getting some teeth and it was painful . . . . So, then, I assumed this was the normal time to wean the pups.

Maybe all moms are different. . . ?

Teething can be apart of it, 4 1/2 weeks is when they usually begin breaking teeth. Yes, all moms are different, that's why I said I let moms set the pace. I don't push the process, as mom's teach so much. By 8 weeks my moms have piddle pad trained their babies, continues to teach acceptable social behavior, teaches them pack order, etc.

sounds like me when i was nursing my boy and girl......i thought they would blow out :yelrotflm
