What is the perfect size for breeding?
 
I have plans to breed in a couple of years so I have been looking for the right breeder to get my first female from. The woman that I am thinking about getting my puppy from has been so nice and helpful and I have heard very good things about her. The parents that I would want my puppy from are a little over 5 pounds (mom) and the father is almost 4lbs. Are these parents big enough for me to expect a decent size female for breeding or is there any way to know for sure?

There is no "perfect" weight or size. Many factors must be considered. One book that I have says to not breed a female less than 5 lbs...but you have to take into consideration the frame of the bitch.

Thank you Kimberley! Do you think that there is way to know what size the puppies from this breeder would be? I am asking this because I would love to have an idea before I mail the deposit check to her.

Much more comes into play other than parents. I was told if you like a dog go back to the dog's sire to breed to. By that I mean you know what the sire of the dog you likes throws. Grandparents are a better indication of what you'll get.

Thank you so much for that! I will have to ask who the grandparents are of the sire. I know who the grandmother of the dam is, but not the sire.

Good advice Kimberly, it is so hard to know what size puppies from two parents will be. I know all my kids grandparents and great grandparents (or have read about great grands). both my litters have had one porker in each litter. the girl I held back to breed from kandy, 4 1/2lbs and ceeby, 4.0 lbs will mature out to about six pounds, i think, the others will be lucky to make it to four pounds. Frankie's (5lbs) litter has one little male that outweighs the others a lot. i am hoping he will slow down when I start weaning. In that same littler is what i guess many people will call a "tiny". He is going to be about three pounds looks like. He will be a great little stud.

You can never count on size and weight. But, as time goes on you become knowledgable about your line.

The sire of my sire is known for throwing puppies that grow and gain very quickly, almost to the point of scaring you. I mean by the time they are about 4 weeks they are 2 pounders and gaining. However, at the age of 4 months they slow down and at maturity max out at 6 pounds. You have to consider that when they are puppies that alot of the weight gain is milk fat. Especially if mom's milk is rich and plentiful.

Then another sire/line are tinies and very slow to mature. But max out at 6 or 7 pounds.

Weight isn't the most important thing, structure, health and temperament are you goals.
