6 hours and only 2 pups so far. . . ?????? She is just now finishing chewing the chord on pup #2. Her hard labor has definitely not STOPPED, but slowed down drastically. Should I be concerned? I mean, 6 hours since the first was born, and we have 3 more to go. . . ? I placed a call to my vet, but it went straight to voice mail. That was about 5 minutes ago, and no return call yet. I'm worried. Should I be? |
Hi ! I am actually up at this time...beacause myself too my yorkie has gone into labour...congrats on the little yorkies!!:aimeeyork Here is a website that i found on YT... i hope it can help while you are waiting to hear back from your vet... Hopefully by now you have heard back from your vet...or everything is going smothly. but if not hopefully it will put some of your worries at ease... http://www.debbiejensen.com/ Basically one thing i always go by is that always go with your gut instinct and it's better to be safe than sorry, I hope all goes good! Unfortunately, I think I would be a little alarmed. She may be having trouble with one or there may be one in each horn trying to come out at the same time. Best to get her to the vet ASAP. Keep us posted. |
Ok, now it's been almost 9 hours. Still only 2 pups. My vet opens in an hour, and the nearest emergency clinic is almost an hour away. I called my vet on her cell, but she didn't answer. grrrrrrrrrrr. Good thing is, the two are doing great. 2 boys. 6 oz & 8 oz. Grace is still having contractions and pushing, it's just infrequent. About every 5-10 minutes. |
She may be getting tired. Do you have any Oxytosin on hand? My vet has me keep it here to give to a mom in that type of situation. You should talk to your vet about it. Keep us updated. That is too long to go with pushing and no pups. |
I thought the oxy was only if the labor stops. She is still having contractions and occasionally pushing. But, no, I don't have any on hand. I was not adequately prepared. (sigh!!) |
Try rolling her teats between your fingers. In humans, this releases oxytocin. It might in dogs too. Please DO NOT do this if you are pregnant (human). It is only done with fetal monitoring and a Dr's care in humans! |
if she is pushing, you don't want to go over 2 hours without a baby being present also they don't want you to go over 4 hours without any contractions in between births so i think she needs to go its early....did i explain that well so you would u/s |
Thank you. I met the vet at 7:30. She took the remaining 3 pups c-section. She said the one in the canal had his head tucked under his leg (??) and that there was no way she would have been able to push him through. All 5 pups are doing well. Mom is slowly waking up. Vet said as soon as she is coherent and able to stand up fine, then I can put the first 2 pups with her. She said that as soon as the other 3 pups are "awake" and more alert, I can put them in with her, watching to make sure they do ok together. I'm really upset with me vet right now, because she said that the placentas were starting to separate from the pups, and that if that had happened, they would not have been alive. I thought, well, then why didn't you answer your cell when I called you at 3:30 and 5:30 this morning????? But, I kept my mouth shut, and prayed that the pups would be ok. And they are. |
didn't the vet give you his/her cell phone when you went in earlier? you would think they would answer. uggggg, i am so happy she is ok and you have all of your babies. sorry about the c-section. good luck to all of you |
Oh, yes, she gave me her cell number. When I got there at 7:30 this morning, she said she had a late meeting, and that she turned her cell phone off to charge it & forgot to turn it back on. Gee. |
Sorry about your experience. I'd be livid. Thank goodness your babies are okay though. |
You have every right to be upset. Poor mommy. I am sure she will feel better when she wakes up. Thank God everyone is ok. I swear Doctor's sometimes are good for nothing. You poor thing must have been so stressed. I am just thinking about it. Congratulations and hope the little ones continue to grow and be healthy. |
Wow, sounds like you had a tough time!! I am glad all turned out well and you have some perfect babies and mama's OK. Have fun with them and keep us posted. |
I'm so sorry you went thru this and I hope it will be the last time! This happen to me with a Boston I had back in 1985. She was exausted by the time I took her to the Vet. and she needed C section. However she was so drained that she almost died during surgery and then she got a staph infection and I had to bath her and the 5 puppies every day in a medicated wash. I had her spayed and swore I'd never do that to another dog, and I haven't! |
