Need advice
 
I purchased a male yorkie 5 months ago , who is 9 months old now and he has a double set of upper teeth! He's gorgeous and I love him. As a young pup he had no teeth problems . I never knew this is a problem with yorkie! What can be done and is it genetic? I was hoping maybe down the road to show him in AKC and use him as stud...I'm heart broken over this. Please any advice would be helpful!

Very common-I had my Yorkiepoo's teeth pulled & cleaned last Oct & microchipped. My other Yorkie I did not pull his teeth as years ago the ansthesia wasn't as good. Kay:animal36

Seems to be a fairly common problem and I've heard most people have them pulled when they are neutered. Seeing as you want to stud him I'm not sure what you do. Maybe give him lots of things to chew on to see if that will help loosen them without surgery? Others on here with more experience can help you:)

Lex lost his last tooth right before he was neutered at a full year. Someone on here a while back said that their cutie had lost his last tooth at 13 months. So never fear.

If you are wanting to show him in the future you should have the puppy canines removed now before they mess up his bite. Get him in a handling class and attend a few matches to start him out. It's loads of fun!

Thanks...I'm not sure what to do. I'm going to give him some more chew toys and hope they can come out ..or maybe by the time he's alittle over a year, I'll take him to the vet and get the teeth out! I really don't want it to come to that because of his size...he's alittle over 3 pounds! His adult teeth are right behind his baby teeth. I bathed him the other day and just happened to look in his mouth and was shocked by that. Shark teeth. The breeders never said the parents had that problem or anything. So now I know !! He's of good quality and has no other problems but this changes everything.

Any one knows if this is genetic or runs through some lines ?
 
I want to make sure this doesn't happen in the future w/ future puppies and everything. How can I be on the look out for this ?

Coco had double canines and looked funny, but she was almost a year when the last one finally fell out. I had to play loads of tug of war with her to get that one to fall out. Everyone kept saying to have the vet remove them but I didn't want to put her under if it wasn't necessary, so I bought her tough bones and played tug of war with her, using those ropey toys :D

Relax! Retained puppy canines are not a big deal and quite typical in Yorkies. The canines have longer roots and are just a bit harder to get out. If they are lined up side by side you can usually wiggle them loose over time. If they are lined up in a row (as the top ones ususlly are) they often need to be removed. If your not worried about the bite getting off than you can probably wait it out. They often come out after 1 year of age. If you want to show the dog, you might want to have them removed right away to protect the bite. It's really not a genetic problem and I'm sure his line is fine. It just has to do with tiny mouthes and long rooted puppy canines. If you breed I'm sure you'll run into this again. Cricket had hers out when she weighed 3.5 lbs and she did just fine. Just make sure that they use gas instead of injection, they're only out for a few minutes.

Thanks for your help...eased my mind alittle bit! I had high hopes for this boy and never experiencing or hearing about this ...worried me! Its his upper teeth ...4 in a row! if you don't mind me asking , how much did it cost you to have your vet pull your little girls teeth? What happens after their pulled out? Any problems?

My vet is very reasonable. Having the canines pulled is usually $34. but he charged $10. more for pain management for Cricket since she's so tiny and the roots were very long. They pull them before noon and I pick them up before 3:00. She came home, rested a bit, ate a little soft food, and was herself the next day. Out of my last litter only one pup didn't have to have her upper canines removed. They fell out before she was 8 monthes old. I always have my showdogs canines removed.

Thats real reasonable..I'll hve to check and see what my vet cost to have that done. I never knew this double teeth is a common problem!

I have noticed that my baby girl Scarlet has the same thing happening with her teeth. Now about 3 weeks ago she had a full row on top and then a second full row coming through, I called her "Shark" lol...but then she started to lose them, and now she only has 2 left. I think this is a very common thing in Yorkies because of the long roots, especally if your baby is tiny. Scarlet is just a little over 6 months and weights a little over 3 pounds. I am sure it will be no problem and you should still be able to stud the little man out. I would just check with your vet about it. Its so common that I don't think it has anything to do with genetics just the length of the roots. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your help ...my boy is 9 months old and is alittle over 3 pounds as well! He is perfect otherwise and when I saw his "problem" I was like oh no...what does this mean for us and more for what does he need!

My female is abit over 4 pounds and she has no problems w/ her teeth! This is so new to me and around my area there isn't many yorkie breeders or people to talk to! I hope his comes out in time ..his adult teeth look good from what I can see! Those darn baby teeth !!
