One week until due date: concerned Grace's x-ray clearly shows 5 pups. One of them, however, had a much bigger head than the others. My vet measured and said that right now, 5-6 days before whelping, it's head is the same size as Grace's pelvis opening. She said that it should be ok, provided this pup is not the first one out. She gave me her cell number to call her in case Grace begins labor at night and I think there is a problem. How long after she starts labor should I suspect a problem? With her first litter, she threw all three pups within 1 1/2 hours of beginning labor. |
my labor last night started at 8:30p and stopped at 400 am and only three puppies. rule of thumb....if she is contracting, never let it go over 2 hours. if she is not, they can be 4 hours apart. if she has broken her water, again, not over 2 hours befor the puppy is born. if she is distressed, take her to the vet right a way |
Thank you, lisatodd. I have so much information in my books, as well as info from Debbie Jenson's website, and I've read it 1,000 times. I'm just getting the jitters again. I called my mentor, and she said basically the same thing you have. She tends to be more of a hands-off, let-mother-nature-do-her-thing person, and she has been breeding for many years. So, I like to get more input and different opinions. The pup with the bigger head really worries me. I just pray it's not the first one delivered. |
her last delivery last night was a hard one for her and the biggest. when she had the contractions, i kept seeing the puppy come out then in. she kept pushing and standing up and pushing. i finally pushed her belly with my hand. i was pushing downward when she had the contractions and finally it came out. all three of her puppies were BIG. i could not believe how big they were. her last two litters, they were small. i hope this helps you if she is having troble with one coming out. |
ohhhhh and another thing. one of them i had to swing to get the fluid out. (which i have never done before) i could hear the fluid and saw some bubbling from his mouth. just make sure there is nothing like a light fixture above you. when i swung the little boy upward, i hit his head on the light fixture. oops. i thought i had killed him but he was fine and still is. when i told the dr, he just laughed. he said many people when they swing the puppy end up throwing it but the puppies are fine |
I used to raise pits, and it varied each time they had a litter. Sometimes is was quick, and sometimes really slow. I'd call the vet the first minute you have an inkling something may be wrong. |
Ok, thanks for the tips! |
Good luck. |
