Please help! My puppies were born Monday between 2-4pm. My smallest has only gained 1/8 oz. About 3am I woke to crying. Mom had him in her mouth trying to put him out. I dried him off, warmed him up and helped him nurse after much trying. I made sure she pooped him. Everytime I leave her she puts him out. Someone please help! |
do you mean she puts him out of the whelping box? it appears she feels something is wrong with him. they will push them away. how many did she have? you may need to supplement. i have never had this happen but have read many stories about this. i hope someone here can help you out. |
I have heard the mom will push them aside if something is wrong with the pup. She doesn't expect it to live. You may need to bottle feed the pup if it's not getting fed by mom. How much did the pup weigh at birth? |
She only had 3. They were 3 1/2, 3 7/8 & 4 ozs at birth. They now weigh 3 3/4, 4 3/8 & 4 1/2. She put one of the others out of the whelping box too so I took away the box and have them were there is no place to move them to. |
Like the other YT'ers said she will push them away if they are sick or something is wrong with them. That is your baby's way of saying mom i need help with this one somethings wrong with it. Now taking away the welping box may have solved the issue of stopping her from pushing the pups away but how are you certain that she's letting them nurse when they should be. I would keep a close eye out and be prepaired to take over nursing on the pups she's pushing away. Also you may want to vet to check out the little one she keeps pushing away. |
Just saw your thread and hope everything is fine with your little pup. I had one that the mother kept taking from the box too. I supplemented the puppy 4 times a day and also weighed her daily to make sure she was gaining. Each day and ounce seemed to be a victory. The vet and two breeders told me not to expect her to live as the mother probably knew something that I did not know. I also used a large midwest type cage and shut it when I could not be around, so the mother could not take the puppy out. Anyway my story ended happily, as my little Angel survived and is healthy as can be. Took her to the vet several times to get check ups, but they never could find anything wrong. I named the puppy Angel as I figured she was destined to either die and be an angel or with my help maybe she would survive. In that case she was my earth angel. She now is happily living with another Yter! |
What did you supplement with? I have been just making sure he nurses which means I actually put him on a teat. Was there a point when you knew she was out of the woods? |
When I say supplement, I mean that I bottle fed Angel. She still nursed too. I used a powdered puppy formula to which I added the required water, puppy drops, and Dyne, a vanilla flavored high calorie supplement. At three weeks, I started Angel of runny canned puppy food, to which I added the Dyne. Once she was eating good, I quite supplementing with the formula. I am not sure how I knew she was out of the woods. I was always waiting for something to happen. This is one reason she went to the vets' often (Thank goodness our vet is cheap and compassionate. He did not charge us if we were taking in other dogs for things and shared the visit with them) When she reached a pound I celebrated. I think now at 8 months she is 3 pounds. Michele's vet now is helping her to put weight on Angel. After Angel was weaned a lady that raises yorkies told me that if a mother does not think she has enough to feed all the puppies she will pick the smallest one to sacrifice. Not that there is anything wrong with it. This made me feel better because Angel's litter was a whopping 8! She was by far the smallest. I feel this is the reason that Angel was taken from the box instead of a problem. I know this is not always the case though. Have you had your puppy checked out by a vet? |
