when do I teach the puppies to lap up liquid? My puppies are 18 days old and the Vet. said I should start teaching them to lap up liquid (puppy formula). They will lap a little out of my hand however will not lap up out of any container or baby spoon. How long does it take for them to learn this? I've been having them lap out of my hand for about 5 days and always offer the spoon, so they can learn how to lap out of a plate or bowl. thanks for any suggestions! |
My babies ended up being hand raised so we had the lapping battle as well. They were about 4 weeks old before they started to persue lapping on their own. They were 5 weeks before they got a good hang of it. They still snort some every once in a while. Good Luck |
weaning If all is well with the dam, there is no need to start feeding the pups until at least 4 weeks...I start weaning at 4 1/2 to 5 weeks and want them totally off mom at 6 weeks. |
question about de-worming Thank you for the advice about weaning. I do have another question about the de-worming process. I have the medication and will start it tomorrow, on Mother and Pups. However I was wondering if she continues to eat their waste will it not some how affect her? I guess what I have not researched is what to expect while de-worming from Dam and pups. Thanks for this great forum to discuss these issues! |
worming You have to be careful about worming tiny Yorkies. I get a stool and have the vet check it for worms..no worms, no need. I never worm before 6 weeks..but my moms are wormed once a year and I don't find worms anyway...but I know moms can not actual have worms and pass the larva on to the pups in the milk..just doesn't happen to me. Do you think MOM and pups have worms??? Only round worms do this..hooks would be in her stool. |
worming I think (after reading your reply) I'm going to wait till they start weaning so that I can check their stool. Thanks for the advice! |
