Mother's Milk Replacement :confused: What brand would you recommend as a milk replacement? Also, what would you use that is small enough to give it to a puppy that is no bigger than a Bic lighter? A larger pup would just use a small human infant bottle nipple. These little tykes are so small, I just can't imagine what to use....maybe a small syringe..., but that would be too hard on the end. My baby hasn't had her pups yet...just trying to get the supplies ready. Thanks so much and Aloha. :wavey: |
Go to your vets office and ask them for a syringe that they use for diabetic dogs, They are real small and will work fine for your puppies. That's waht I always use and Nurturall is probably the best milk replacement. It, too is what I use. I work at a vet s office and that is what we reccomend to everyone. You probably won't need any of it, but your right to get prepared early. Good luck with your babies, just sold my last one out of my last litter, so thanlfully for now I'm beyond what your just getting ready for!;) Let us know when they are born. |
Thanks for the reply bobbiej... It's very early in the process but after reading all the threads about the pups being whelped, the excitement is building already. I'm supplementing mom's food with 1/4 dropper of Puppy Drops Vitamins and about 100mgs of calcium at each feeding 2x daily. Hopefully not overdoing anything. I've got a book on whelping pups and I'm getting my 'whelping kit' ready. Also going to build that whelping box that I found in a thread on here a couple of days ago (that I can't find again LOL). I use Firstborn milk supplement for tiny puppies. I add a touch, a drop of honey to it in a 3 cc syringe( to the 3cc of milk supplement). Puppy should be held upright if feeding with a syringe. Tiny pushes and then stop, started at the side of the mouth, then once they get the taste most will start licking, take the LONG tipped syringe and suck on it from the front of the mouth. Continue with tiny pushes of the syringe. If they are still hungry, repeat with another 1 to 3 cc. I do this about 3 times a day if mommy is feeding the puppy too and they are just small. If they are orphaned or unable to nurse from mother you would need to do this 8-10 times, thru day and night for several weeks. Increasing the milk with age of the puppy and size. Just what I do, hope this might give you some help if you need it some day. . |

Wanted to add. If mom is of good weight, eating well, I wouldnt supplement her with anything the last part of her pregnancy, unless you want to treat her with chicken breast, or scraps of roast beef......real food. That is just my own personal opinion. DENY HER CHOCLOATE ICE CREAM WITH PICKLES AND RAISIINS!:D |

Yes the honey is for help to regulate thier sugar levels. SOme people dont like honey though at all. But in my experience it works very well for my puppies. I dont use it because I know they are suffering from hypoglycemia, I just use it for a boost and it stimulates their appetite. They eat much better. If I leave it out when I have a puppy who really needs it, many times they refuse the supplement, and I have to force feed it instead of them taking it happily. |
Be careful on giving calcium suppliments during pregnancy. I definitely would do it as soon as she whelps though. Where in Hawaii are you from? I was born and raised in Kailua, Oahu ;) I have a litter that is now 14 weeks old so I just went through what you did. If you have any qustions feel free to give me a call or pm. |

Called my vet about the calcium... they are off on Sunday... Question for all about the calcium supplements:icon5: ...What exactly makes them bad? Seems that the formation of those skeletons (albeit tiny skeletons) within her, if she doesn't supply enough calcium to them, you would think that it would be detrimental for them or they might draw it from her frame. Is there a possibly of stones forming? I checked her food (Science Diet Puppy) and they don't mention calcium in the ingredients. So I'll need to get it to her some how. |

I called one vet and he said that he thought it would be alright to supplement calcium but he doesn't deal with a lot of yorkies and couldn't tell me if there was anything that would effect the breed, so I'm not stopping there. Soooo, I've called my other vet and he should be getting back to me this evening. One more question though...has anyone used Esbilac Milk Replacement? Also if y'all could see the attachment, I found the Ready-to-Feed version and the nipple is a little bit smaller than Koko's nipples. Will this work as a nurser? Has anyone tried this? :confused: |

I used honey for a couple of years, then when I started working for the vet I work for now, he said the best over the counter fix to use is Karo syrup. It doesn't have the caramel coloring, (which usually has a minute amt of caffein in it) plus the sugar level is higher so it works better, especially for a pup who is already having sugar issues, and will help with the ones who don't to not get sugar issues. It sure saved my little guy. Now I get dextrose and use that. |

Also if y'all could see the attachment, I found the Ready-to-Feed version and the nipple is a little bit smaller than Koko's nipples. Will this work as a nurser? Has anyone tried this? :confused:[/QUOTE] That nipple will be fine. After about 2 1/2 weeks I used a Gerber newborn nipple on that bottle and it worked really well with the pups. The smaller nipple they kept rejecting. I tried almost every nipple out there too :eek: I used the Just Born formula though. Petco sells it. My vet said the protein in the just born is better than the Esbilac but I know different things work for different people. If you need something that you dont have in Hawaii let me know I will be there next week and I could bring it down. |
