8 hours and 5 puppies later... Ok let me start off by saying that no matter how much research you do, no matter if you've sat in on a litter being born, you have a mentor, or you have a great vet.....nothing can possibly prepare you for your own first litter!!! I don't know, maybe others have had different experiences but I've done research for 3 years on breeding, sat in on a whelping, have a mentor, and I was still a nervous wreck calling the vet 6 or 7 times today!!! My yorkie Cassie had 5 live puppies today!!! I took her and them to the vet to make sure everything was ok. (And this is where my question starts!) Cassie let me help her with the births, opening of sacs, cutting cords, moving the babies when she was working on another comming out, exc......WELL, I took them to the vet, Cassie had to be mussled so they could check her out, mussled again to check out babies, by the 3rd time we were trying to put one of the babies back in the box Cassie just had enough and freaked out not letting anyone near them, including me! She even nipped me when I tried moving the towel out of the way (which has NEVER happened before!) When I got them home, one of the babies was under a towel and couldn't get out so I tried to move it.....Cassie started to growl! I had to restrain her so I could get to it. So my questions are.....Is she just being a protective mother? Is this normal? Has anyone had this problem before? And if so could you please give me some advice? Friendly advice please:) Also, the first and second puppies she had, she cut (chewed) their cords....(I was sleeping and she got out of her whelping box, when I got up this morning she had already had 2 puppies and the third one was on it's way...another thing that didn't go as planned!) The runt, who I named Lil' Bit, had a cord hurrnea but the bowls were still inside the vet stiched her up and gave her antibiodics, and sent her home with medicine and more antibiodics, despite all of our efforts, she passed shortly after I got back home from the vet:( I'll keep you updated on the progress of the other 4.....by the way the count was 3 girls and 1 boy...the 5th I forgot to check, and now Momma won't let me...so now it's 2 girls 1 boy and a ??? Thanks in advance for your help! |
Sorry I can't help, I've not experienced that. I do want to congratulate you on your litter though. I bet they are adorable. Also, welcome to YT.:) |

Congradulations on your new little ones, prayers that all goes well and that Cassie will soon settle down, maybe she is just being protective, beings it is her first litter. Cassie is such a special name, look forward to pictures of her and the little ones. Please keep us updated on how she is doing and the babies. Patti and Baby Blessing |

thank you... well today is her 65 day from the last bred and my vet called me a few minutes ago and told me that if its not today he recommends me to take her tomorrow for a c-section.. My question is she doesn't even has milk yet. Does it matter?. Thank you so much... |
I'm not exactly sure about the milk situation.... I do know that sucking stimulates milk production, so If they latch on well and suck well the milk should come.....it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some milk replacer on hand just in case, if you don't already:) I'm sure your vet can help more if you don't get the answer here. Good luck and let me know what happens. |
a good helpful and informative web site is www.dogbreedinfo.com then click on "So you want to breed you dog..." I don't know if it has anything on milk, but still a "what to know when expecting" very helpful |
just had first litter Hi, just wanted to let you know our little female just had her first litter on Jan. 22. She was very protective for about a week with the puppies, she would growl and bark at everyone. I had never seen her act like that. Now she has settled down and is such a good mommy. I worried that she did not have enough milk, bought supplement, and then it came in, though only in the back. We have three darling puppies two females and one male. I was very surprised, as one little female weighted almost 4 1/2 ozs. while the other two only weighted around 2 ozs. Best of everything to you and your new babies. |
girls the pain started already, she is having like contractions... she contracts her stomach and make little pain sounds when she is contracting... OMG... I think it's today .... |
Good luck AngieG0618! Hope all goes well for you and yours:) |

first of all congrats on the babies. i know it is crazy when the puppies start to come. like you said, everything you do to prepare for it, is nothing like what you have read. each one is different and it will never be the same. give mommy lots of hugs and kisses (from afar) for us. keep us updated. also, i am sorry for the loss of the little one. that, i have never had to deal with but have seen many here on yt |
