False Pregnancy If on a dogs first heat they have what appears to be a false pregnancy, very swollen breast toward the end of the heat, probably due to hormones because she has not been near a male 200% positive. The swelling starts going back down to normal, she has never ran a fever. Is swelling normal during heat? I know women swell during menstration. Should a dog that does this be considered to be unfit for breeding or is it normal & is not a factor in breeding. |
they can get a little puffy or gain a little weight. I know mine does. They may even "adopt" a little stuffed animal as their own...carry it around, try to get it to nurse. Take all toys away from her. It may take a while, but she'll be back to normal in no time. |
My dog went into heat back in november. Her teats are now swelling and I didnt put it together until tonight that she is going through a false pregnancy. I made a vet appt for friday, I didnt know if she had some type of infection, but was looking at her tonight and one of her teats starting leaking. Should I keep my appt and have her seen, or is the "normal", so to speak. Is it odd she would be having false pregnancy now? She went into heat 11/10. |

Rachelsyorkie - wondering how your appt went. I took bella, they thought she might be pregnant, wanted to take xrays, but since she is a virgin i said no. she is definately not pregnant. they expressed some of her milk and tested it and she was getting an infection, so she is on antibiotics now. They told me I should either breed her soon or have her spayed. Have recently decided I do want to breed her so I am now searching for a stud. |
I couldnt get her in right away, so its in a few more days, I'll let you know. I didnt go in on a emergency visit because I dont feel there is a immediate threat, no fever, stool is solid, playful, eating well. But I do want to have it checked & also have a good check up & tests run to make sure she is in the best health should we decide to have pups, but I'm torn because she's on the small side of the standard. I love her & would love to have a pup from her, but weighing the cons to. Hopefully the test results will make the decision clearer. Congrats on deciding to breed. I may just have my girl spayed. If she would develop another infection next heat & lose pups, maybe even lose her. Yikes I cant even imagine. We'll see what the vet says. Then make a decision. |
I'm curious how much your dog weighs? Bella is 5 1/2 pounds, so I need to find a smaller stud. I have waited 3 years to breed her because I too am hesitant and definately do not want to put her at risk. It has been my dream to breed though, and if I do breed her, I just pray God will see us through.:) I just wish I could find a mentor, would make it so much easier. Good luck on your appointment! |
My girl is alittle smaller then yours. I know alot of people are breeding 4.5 girls to 3lb boys & having no probs, but I'm sure some are having probs too. Here is a thread I have been reading, their is a pic of her girl, she looks very tiny. She just lost the smallest pup, a little male:( But has 2 girls left. Maybe she could help you after she experience alittle more. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...312#post948312 |
