weight to dock? I have the smallest babies this time ever. The two smallest are 3.5 and 3.0 ozs. tomorrow is doc day. Should I wait another day or two on these little ones or will it be alright to do them now with the others? I am afraid to do it now and afraid to wait because the older the puppy is the worse it hurts. |
I haven't had a pup that small yet but I think I would take them all to the vet and have him decide after he looks them over. After 5 days old it does get more complicated as the vascular system finishes developing so early is definitely better. |
weight This is the reason learning to dock tails is so vital for a breeder. You can dock as they are ready..I do them at 3 to 5 days if all is well and they are gaining..weight isn't really a factor for me. Sometimes, one is ready and others are not..so I can dock as needed...crush and twist is a simple, bloodless method and not that risky for a tiny..cutting and surture is... |
I've had a 2.4 ounce puppy's tail docked in the past... as YorkieRose had said... "as long as the pups are gaining weight"... there should be no problem getting the tails docked and dew claws removed. Good luck. :) |

Hi Sugar I dock at 3-5 days. You said its dock day, not sure what day it is for your puppy if its earlier then day 5, Id wait on a weaker puppy hoping the weight will be more stable at day 5. I give nutri drops immediately after the dock and dew claw. |
tails I PM'ed you...cutting is surgery. Stitching is painful. and takes time, not over in seconds. I did it for years..then tried the clamp...tails are so small it never takes more then a couple twists and the tails is off..no blood loss..I do not like any bleeding..do the same with the declaws and they will not bleed..claws can bleed more then tails...I have docked tails while the pups were laying down nursing..no need to even take them from mom. |

Otherwise... not to scare you... there could be something wrong with the pup. I hope not. All the best. Keep us posted...... |
Update i just docked all my tails except hers by myself. I did the clamp and twist. it was so easy. They whined a little just when I had them away from mommy but there was not one drop of bloood. I am going to do dew claws next but i guess I will get hubby to help with that. i will never cut another tail. it is so messy compared to this method. She is back to 3.2 at noon so I will dock hers later tonight or in the morning. That will be day 5. |
tails Good for you...no blood loss conveniced me to try it..leave the clamp on a bit longer for the claws..they can bleed a bit... |
What clamps do you use, hemostats? I want to do my own next time but hate to try it until I've been shown how to do it properly. |
Yes, could you please explain this method? Pictures would help also.:) |

If you can get a copy of Teri Shumsky's howto buy and raise a good healthy dog....or do a google search on docking tails....you can find all kinds of illustrations on the clamping method. |

I'm not doing something right cause I have looked and searched and not found any illustrations on how to use the clamping method. All I have found is anti-tail docking and using the clamped tail to test pharmaceudicals(sp). Do you know of a specific site? Sylvia |

3.3 She finally got back up to her birth weight this morning and I docked her tail. She whined a little but has been fine. Acting as if it never happened. |
tails Glad all is well....if anyone lives close to me, I will be happy to show them..taught many...showed a few vet. They told me they were taught to cut and stitch.. When I decided to learn, I watch a video from Teri Shunsky..but I do it a bit different now... |

declaws I use a much smaller hemostat on the declaws...not much bigger then tweezer...clamp, wait 10 seconds, twist..leave about 30 seconds. |
