Check the YTCA.org for standard and reputable breeders |
Is soft coated the same as a cottony coat?? I have one yorkie w/ a sily coat, the other with a cottony coat. |

When I first started breeding I was dead set on the only dogs I would buy are blue and tan/gold because that was the color for show dogs. When I went to buy my second yorkie, the breeder had a litter of black and gold yorkies there and I couldnt take my eyes off of them. The stood out and were so much prettier than the blue ones with those dark rich colors. I came home with 3 blue and golds but couldnt stop thinking about how much prettier those black and gold puppies were. I agree with Mardelin, the black ones seem to have a soft coat. My Louie is more black and has a soft coat and it is nice and thick and is very easy to take care of. It doesnt mat hardly at all and it is so soft and pretty. I guess it all depends on which ones you like the look of the best. A nice dark steel blue coat is the best but the black ones are beautiful too. |
whats the difference between a soft and a silky coat? |
Cali has a black coat and it does matt pretty easy but she is not cottony but not real silky either. I like the steel blue silky coats. |
4 Attachment(s) You know I always thought I would want the traditional blue and gold but after owning both, one blue and gold and one black and gold, I prefer the darker of the two. Scampers is black and gold. I got him at 12 weeks old and he had a bit of silver on his head but his body was black. I asked the breeder if he would turn blue on his body like his parents and she said no because he would have started it already. At over a year old now, he is still black and gold, so his breeder was right. I would look at the roots like someone suggested. If the roots are still black with no trace of blue then I would say you have a good chance of it staying black. Also look at the parents and if the breeder knows her dogs she may be able to tell you whether he/she will stay dark. As for his hair type, I am not sure what it is. At times it feels cottony and dry but most of the time is is smooth and silky and very shiny. As long as I brush him everyday his hair doesn't really matt. Here are a couple pictures of what his hair looks like. In the second pic, his hair is wavy. I just tried a new conditoner on him and it made his hair wavy, normally it is straight and long. |

I have three furbabies, 2 blue, 1 black.. even though AKC says blue is what is wanted everyone likes the black.. My Petey was and still is black, black, black.. He doesn't have a silky coat, but then again, he doesn't mat either. I can go weeks without brushing him, and then only find one small mat. (he is such a baby when it comes to brushing him, I hate to do it!) |
