How often should mom be nursing 2 1/2 week old puppies? Hi, our pups are 2 1/2 weeks old now and Katie is staying out of the whelping box quite a bit. How often should they be nursing now? They seem content, only whining once in awhile and she will go to them when she hears them. There have been a couple of time I made her get in and lay down and nurse because I thought they were hungry but then they just ate a little and cuddled and went back to sleep. They are still gaining weight although it has slowed down which I figure is normal. Am I being paranoid? I am just afraid that she is getting broken away from them since she is not staying in with them much. Should I try to make her or just let them be? Please give some advice? |

Are you keeping mother and babies confined in an area; x-pen, puppy play pen. Sometimes, when mothers are not used to being confined, they're a reluctant to stay with puppies. Then puppies like to use mom as a pacifier. If they're gaining steadily, I wouldn't be too worried. |
I dont have them in an xpen yet.....I just have the whelping box in my bedroom. She is used to having her run of the house and is usually at my side or my son's. I think she is mostly afraid that she will miss something! lol She does not like being confined at all and when she is in a pen she just jumps up and down the whole time wanting out. I'm not sure what I will do when they really start getting around good? I know I need to use the x-pen but I'm sure she will wear me out wanting in and out. LOL I also tried moving the whelping box into the room where I am and she didn't like that, tried pulling it back to the bedroom so that is where it has stayed. She is just so smart! |
