Panting after whelping? Lucy had her pups yesterday and they are latched on and doing good, she is eating and drinking and has gone out to go potty. She does pant for about a minute and then stops for a few minutes. I dont think it's too hot in her bed... is it just normal for them to pant now and again. She doesnt seem distressed or anything. Her temp is 101.3 is this fine? Let me know what you think. Thanks |
i am a new breeder myself but my bitch did this the night after she whelped several times. it was several hours after she had finished. then she settled down. i took her to the vet next morning for her post whelp check up and her shot. I told him about this and he said it was probably still her uteruss contracting occassionally. |
Good to know, thanks! |
Especially during nursing, it releases oxytocin, to help the uterus to contract and shrink. It normal to pant at times. Eclampsia should always be considered if other symptoms are present. You can do a search on that, it's been discussed many times. |
it could be simply she is too hot, it gets warm being surrounded by her pups and if your using a heating pad or keeping the room warmer than normal. Make sure you take her temp 2 times a day for the next 3 or 4 days...any elevation get her to the vet.... |
