How much weight should puppies be gaining? Hi I was just wondering if anyone can tell me how much the puppies should be gaining? I am recording their weight to make sure they are getting enough milk. The technician at the vet's office says that I probably won't see a daily difference because of their size but I thought I had seen a lot on here that if they weren't showing any gain to give them supplement? I think they are fine because they are content and have gained a little. They are so precious! I am still upset about losing one but I know that happens. It is just so frustrating. My husband keeps telling me to let them alone, that Katie is their mommy and she knows what to do. LOL I just can't help myself. |
If they are gaining a few "tenths" of an ounce per day that is fine (they shouldn't stay the same weight or lose).... Best of luck with them!! :) |
My vet says they should double their weight the first week and than gain steadily for the next fews weeks. I've found for the most part this is the pattern mine seem to follow. |
It sounds like they're doing great. Gaining, slow or fast is good. Fast is better for us of course. I just lost one of my litter also, so I reallly empathize with your loss. I continue to contemplate what could've happend and what I can do the next time, to prevent it. Sadly, we're going to lose a one or two, hopefully we've lost our last ones. |
Thanks for the replies everyone. I know I am probably just worrying too much after losing one of this litter but I think better safe than sorry. Pups are 4 days old today and have gained pretty well i think. Pup #1 was 3.25 oz and is now 4.125, pup #2 was 2.25 oz and is now 3.5, and pup # 3 was 2.5 and is now 4.125. # 3 is a little piggy. |
Those are good gains. Keep up the weighing and if there's one in particular you're concerned about, be sure to put her on a full teat first. |
