Should I breed my Max
 

I had an appointment for this coming friday to get Max fixed. He's now about 14 months old. Originally I was going to breed him. But Now I see he probably wont be wanted by any serious breeders. Max is about 11lbs and has very large ears so they dont stand up. He's the most awesome Dog I've ever had. Extremely intelligent, obedient and above all---HOUSE TRAINED!!! no accidents, aside from the occasional excited pee when its been too long in between going out.

Anyway, my neighbor came out to see me today and asked if I would be interested in letting Max breed with her daughter's Yorkie. Not to make money or anything like that, just because she wants to let her dog have one litter.

Question is---should I put off getting Max fixed and allow him to breed (hopefully she will accept my fabulous male), or should I just continue to go and get him fixed. I figured it doesn't much matter if he gets fixed now or in a few months. The thing I was wondering about is, once he mates successfully (if he does) does it change his demeanor or anything? Much appreciate any feedback on this. I'm sorry for being so ignorant about the subject. I am also hoping that if the mating is successful that she'll give me one of the babies.

You asked and I will tell you my opinion...Max should be neutered. He sounds wonderfully suited for what he is..a loving companion Yorkie. He is not marking in the house and he is a good, clean boy...breed him and that is apt to change...even if it does not, it is a responsible thing to not breed a male with his faults..nothing personal Max!

Go ahead and have him neutered and try convince your neighbors that "just to have a litter" is no reason to breed. Tell them about this site and maybe they can come on and learn something about all the rescue Yorkies in the world and all the over breeding that is being done. Please, please talk to them!

Thanks for your opinions. I really needed to hear this. Its my hubby that wants to do this more than me. I think (no offense men) my hubby's feeling Max's pain and doesnt' want me to go through with it lolol

PS about those yorkie rescues, I have yet to find one in my area. I thought it would be great to get another Yorkie, but I wanted to do the right thing and get one that no one else wanted.

How big is 'daughter's yorkie'? Since the male needs to be smaller than the female, this is definitely not a match made in heaven unless the daughter's pooch is 15lbs?

I'm sure max is beautiful and sweeet. A wonderful pet but this dog should not be bred. he is way out of the standard size and any femalee that was bred to him would probably be in grave danger. Please have him neutered and love him just as he is.

Well Max is over the standard size. But thats really your choice if you want to breed him or not. The female should be larger then the male. If he is already house trained, Breeding him could change this and it may start him marking. If you do breed him you have every right to ask for the pick of the litter. If they say No , then dont breed him with their female. Im not saying you should or you shouldnt, Thats your choice .Mating has never changed my little male hes as sweet as he ever was, But he does mark when my female is in heat. Good luck to you in what ever you decide to do.

Where does it end??? When I can pick up a Dallas newspaper and there are 78 ads for Yorkies, or some mix of Yorkie. Does no one see the problem? I'm sorry but it just make me ill how many people are breeding just to breed. Yes, they're beautiful and loving, but people, be responsible!! Even Bob Barker has reminded people for years, "Spay or neuter". Breeding should be left to people who are actually involved in trying to improve the breed, not just want puppies because they are soooo cute, or they can make a buck!! No, I'm not a member of some human society that has come back to haunt people, Im just someone that has been involved with dogs for years and learned about responsible breeding 30 years ago, You can call it bashing, or whatever you want to, I just call it caring about a beautiful breed and what's becoming of it.

I would be glad to send your neighbour with the female that wants to breed just one litter, the email address of a lady I know that got a female to breed just one litter. She almost lost the female, lost 4 puppies, the 5th is precarious and needed the aid of a kindly Vet assistant willing to take this weak pup on as she did not have the skill to even begin to try to raise it. She is more than willing to caution anyone wanting to do this, against doing it. I won't even tell you what the vet bills ran and maybe one puppy survived. Too soon to tell.
She was lucky she didn't lose her pet girl. Both the sire and dam are schedule for spay/neuter next week.

The Bad Thing Is ....even On This Yt, You See Mommies 12lbs W Daddies 4lbs Thinking It Is Ok. Well That Just Doesn't Sit Well W Me. This Is Why We Have So Many Complaints On Dog Sizes. The Yorkie Standard Is No More Than 7 Lbs....lets Keep It That Way.

A breeding pair should both at MINIMUM fall within the standard size if they are to be bred imo.
I'd have your little one neutered OR have a vasectomy done on him if your husband can't stand the idea of his little..."stepchildren"/"boys", whatever he wishes to call them, not being present. ;)
