Hello everyone,
I'm new to Yorkietalk, so I hope I'm doing this right. My name is Sheila and I'm from North Dakota. I want to become a hobby breeder of Yorkies. So I've been trying to read and search and find out all I can. I had a male neutered Yorkie that passed on and I have a 8 year old Maltese that is spayed. She is definitely my fur-child. My kids are grown and gone so it's just my husband and myself at home. It's just way to quiet!

Anyway... I've been finding that some puppies are blue and tan, black and tan, black and gold, etc. The AKC standard is blue and tan. So, if I'm going to do things right, do I search for puppies to start out with that are specificly blue and tan? I want to start with a female that is around 5 pounds and a male that is 4 pounds. I don't want to run into the problems associated with mini, teenie, tea cup, etc.

What price range is about right for good quality pups to start out with? Should they have some champions in their bloodlines to show prospective buyers? Does that usually make buyers feel more confident that they are getting a good quality puppy?

If your looking for good quality to start out with, your best bet is to attend as many shows as you can and try to get to know some of the areas breeders.

All pups start out as black and tan so its hard sometimes to know what the adult color will end up.

I live in North Dakota, so not many shows or breeders. I'm finding two breeders in South Dakota. :)

First of all , you should go to several dogshows , don't start the " hobby breeding " things with them . Observe and listen , ask questions and learn , learn and learn .
A good show quality Yorkie is very expensive .
All puppies are black and tan .

the color of the coats are ever changing. I Fancy the darker coats so my male is very dark black and gold one female is very dark black saddle with silver intermingled and gold markings, another is very dark silver with more tan markings and yet another is all mixed:) and finally my youngest girl is yet to be determined color and I am hopeful to perhaps show her!

I prefer producing the dark colors over the very light so that is why my girls are what they are. I have stud 2 females recently both boys have dark saddle but one is tan other is silver markings. Litter is due mid june so I am excited to see what comes out!

its all very interesting and exciting with each litter to see what your actual outcome will be.

good luck to you, do a lot of reading and ask many many questions...See if there is any YTCA members in your area and call them, ask them if they will mentor you...there are also some very good people on YT that can help....

Its a daunting task picking your breeding stock pick everyones brain then decide what you want to achieve in your breeding program.

Welcome to YT. AKC has 4 standard coors that are listed on their reg. application for Yorkies..blue and tan; blue and gold;black and tan; black and gold. Those of course are the adult colors as all babies should be born black and tan. When in doubt about the color to reg a Yorkie, AKC told me to reg as the same as the mother's colors. It really is of importance only if the dog is to be shown. In case the colors are grossly different, the BREEDER can petition AKC to change the colors.
There are so many informative sites on the internet now. It was really hard to find a mentor when I first started breeding and no internet info-so, shows, books, begging and pleading for info from the show or experienced breeding were the only ways to learn. Luckily, after 3+ years researching, I found a wonderful mentor and slowly began my obsession with Yorkies and breeding. The responsibility in breeding is beyond discription...
