Need advice! Any breeders online?
 

Katie had 4 girls yesterday morning. The last and smallest puppy had problems. Around the cord area there was extra tissue which I guess may have been intestine or some other organs? Could not get it to latch on and it cried the whole time. Anyway, I took it to the vet which said it was not going to make it. Long story short, I was very upset....and cried all the way home....Katie seemed to be upset too and is now guarding the other 3 diligently! So, this morning as I am checking on them one of the puppies (the largest) has milk/mucus around the nose and sounding kind of rattly? I'm thinking this one might have cleft pallete? Oh how bad is this? I am going to call my vet and see what they say. I just dont want to lose another one! She is eating so I know she can, but isn't that bad that it's coming out the nose? Please help with some advice I'm sure some of you have dealt with this before.

did u try to look in its mouth to see if it has cleft , it may just be nothing at all, try to take the bulb syringe and such out its mouth and nose too that might help, hope everything turns out ok, btw if its sleft u might be able to see it when u look in mouth on roof of mouth hun,gl tc and keep us posted

Sometimes puppies are born that can't suckle properly, and it's almost alway's because they have a cleft palate. A cleft palate can be a complete division up the middle of the palate, or roof of the mouth, or it can just be a small hole in the palate.

Canine cleft palate is a failure of the two sides of the palate to fuse correctly during the embryonic stage of developement. It can just be the soft tissue, in which case it only presents as a cosmetic malformation, but if the hard palate is affected, it inevitably spells doom for the new born pup. A cleft pale in dogs can be either a genetic defect, or due to something occuring during the developement of the embryo. Surgical correction of cleft palate

All puppies should be examined for a cleft palate as early as possible, by opening the jaws and looking at the roof of the mouth. If the breed is very small, it may be necessary to get your Vet to check for you.

It is possible to correct a cleft palate surgically, however the pup must be old enough to undergo an anaesthetic, so in the early stages of it's life the puppy will need hand feeding with a stomach tube.

Cleft palate of the outer soft tissue, sometimes called canine hare lip, can repaired surgically at about six months of age. Small holes in the roof of the mouth can self correct as the pup grows older, but may also be corrected surgically if so desired.

Thanks so much for the info! Do you think it can be very bad if she is sucking so well? She is gaining weight and eating...just getting the fluid after she eats, I'm worried that it can get in her lungs? What should i be doing? Can't get ahold of the vet, naturally...I'm waiting for a call back. I have tried looking but Katie has such a fit when I handle her. She is being VERY protective since the other puppy is gone. Do you think I should take her out and try to do it while she is outside? She only wants to go out long enough to pee and come straight back. I don't want to stress her out too much but we have to find out the problem.

did you suction her out when she was born? if you have a bulb syringe like for a baby, take that and suction her mouth and nose out good. then put her backon to nurse and see if she has any more. i hope your vet calls soon. Did you check her mouth to see if it is a cleft palette?

If there is a hole it maybe very small and you may not be able to see it.
Just keep the fluids suction out of the nose-mouth after the pup eats ..
until you can get into the Vet to find out whats going on.

No, I haven't ever had fluid coming out of the nose and mouth. i did have a dead, deformed baby when Silk had hers and I strongly suspect it was from flea medicine the vet told me to use but he denies it. My babies have all been born healthy except that one. Good luck.

It is always best for the dam and pups to be seen by the vet within 24 hrs..mom needs a oxyie shot and the vet can check for clefts...pups can sound raspy, milk can get around the mouth and look like it is in the nose..but if you actually see milk coming out of the nose, it is time for a look/see at the vet...rarely do the big, fat ones have a cleft..it tends to be the wee, puny ones...

Oh..Ok I knew there was something.
I am not using anything but the heartworm meds on my 2 pregnant girls.
And I used it after the foetuses were fully developed.

My Autumn had a litter of 4 puppies back in August. Two were stillborn and one of them didn't look like it was developed properly and one was a cleft pallet and died at 4 days old. I believed it was from the flea treatment the vet gave her because that was the ONLY thing different from this past pregnancy and a previous pregnancy. Her first litter there were no birth defects and we had two healthy puppies, but she didn't have a flea treatment during her pregnancy either.

I did suction the pups mouth and nose. I also saw it spit up a little bit of milk. Vet seems to think it could just be eating too much? She is nursing very well, resting, not crying, so I don't think there is a real problem. The vet is going to check them out really good Monday when I take them for tails and dew claws. Everyone keep them in your prayers, I just couldn't stand to lose another one. They are so adorable, and Katie is being a very good mommy. She won't hardly leave them at all. I am having to feed her by hand because she won't leave them to eat. I am giving her a vitamin supplement and some cottage cheese once a day. I also gave her a tsp. of beer to help the milk come in good. Anything else I should be doing?

oh and I forgot to mention that Katie has not had any flea medicine of any kind, not even flea shampoo, since before she went into heat. No medicines of any kind. She did have her booster shots just before that too though. One thing I was wondering about was the pest control that I have come and spray the house? They only do around the windows and doors usually and it is supposed to be harmless once it dries. I had asked them about it and they said they have never had it bother any pets but what do you think? Is it possible that her being near that could have caused problems? They are supposed to do it this month and now I am afraid to let them do it with the pups here. I am going to ask the vet about that too. Any one ever hear anything about this?
