On average how many puppies are in a litter? Just curious. |
Average is 2-4 pups but I know that there have been litters of 8 or 9 and as small as 1. |

I assume the bigger the yorkie mom the more pups they can have.... My girls are around 5 pounds and average 4 pups (but they have had litters of 1 and 2). |

Do they do an ultrasound on dogs to see how many puppies are there? |
I had an xray done, they are more accuate IMO. I knew she was having one :) I am totaly for having xrays so you know what to expect as far as puppy size and how many. |
My dog is 4-1/2 lbs and she had five. |
as far as an average, i don't think there is. each is different and you can never predict how many one will have. |
My books say average is 1-4. Mine have always had 2,2,2. My mentor has one that has had 6,7,2,5 &6 and her other one has had 5,5,5. I get x-rays, my vet and I then look at previous skull & body sizes and compare them to the ones pending. He's willing to share his knowledge and take the time to discuss anything I ask. |
even # so far this is the topic i was looking for. PepperAnn is due the end of this month with her second litter. and she is a lot bigger this time. the first litter was 4 and she had no problem. then i skipped a heat cycle and now this time she seems to be a lot plumper. I seen that some of you have x rays done. I did not even think the could xray being pregnant. so i thought i would take and get a ultrasound but i am very interested in the xray. so i will find out next week about it. I am so excited to see how they are doing and how many oohhhhh. goody get to pick out names until the new parents take them ( i hate it when they go.) fingers crossed for more girls this time. last litter 1 girl and 3 boys.... |

Vets do ultrasounds but its very difficult for them to see .Sweety had one her first litter at about 28 days but i found it unnessesary.The x-ray is much better they can see so much more that's done at about 55 days |

my aunt's dog KIC's Princess had 9...she was 6 pounds and 11 years old...unfortunately puppy #9 was stuck and killed them both. the 8 surviving puppies are now 7 years old. she went into heat after i bought a new 2 year old male. my 5 year old, 7 pound female Kat's last 3 litters have been 5, 6, 5. my 4 year old, 5 pound female Raggs last 3 litters were 4, 3, 5. my 5 pound female Babyface (8yrs & retired) had 3, 2, 4. |
litters I have had big litters from small girls and small litters from big girls..anywhere from 1 to 7 pups..with most having 3 or 4... A 5 pounder had 7 pups once and her big fat 8 pound sister bred at the same time and 2. |
I would say 4 is the average. |

lotter size My girls average 5 lbs and I have never had less than 4, but mostly I get 5 and the last 2 litters were 6. I never get mine x-rayed or ultra souned tho I know some who do. I just don't like to put Mom thru any stress while she preggie if it's not necessary. |
