Milk Hello how do I know if my momma dog is producing milk? Her nipples are really red and the babbies are sucking on them. Thanks |
have you tried to squeeze milk out with your thumb and finger? If the puppies are not whining or crying they must be getting milk. I am never really sure the first couple of days so I supplement with esbilic every two hours round the clock until I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that momma has milk. both my moms were a couple days early and had no milk at first. i give them a teaspoon of dark beer as soon as they finish whelping. hey, I drink the rest of the bottle myself. I need it by that time and i don't normally even drink beer or anything else. Then I make a pudding for the momma and give it to her a couple of times a day as long as she is nursing. it is; one large box vanilla pie and pudding mix (the kind you cook). four cups milk, four egg yokes and a half cup of sugar. I feed my mama wet puppy food three times a day . The morning meal has a tablespoon cottage cheese mixed in it and the other two meals have the pudding mixed in it. About a tablespoon. I leave dry puppy food down all the time for mama. Good luck with your babies. |

The other thing that can be done is to pinch babies skin to see if they aren't dehydrated. If skin bounces back they are getting plenty of fluid.....If babies are crying, it's a good sign they are hungry. Warm satisfied babies are pretty quiet. If he's still unsure, supplemental bottle feeding until mom is producing milk would be my suggestion. My next question is did he take mom into the vet's for a POP shot....this helps in producing milk as well as helping the uterus to contract and get back into shape. Here's another Whelping Pudding Receipe.....It has no sugar rather than Karo syrup. 16 oz water 1 pkg Unflavored Knox Gelatin (micro to dissolve) 15 oz can evaporated milk 2 Tablespoons vanilla yogurt 2 egg yolks 2 Tablespoons white Karo Syrup. Mix all ingredients in bowl & let set in fridge until thickens. Spoon out as needed |
