Question on new born baby milk My Sabrina is pregnant and due any day now, her temp has gone up and down in between 99.2 and 99.5, she is still eating and when the doctor seen her last week he said everything looks fine there are four babies so she might need a calcium supplement and I might need to feed the babies myself. The thing is he didn't tell me what type of milk to get, I seen some baby milk called Esbilac but there seem to be milk only for bigger dogs I seen nothing that said for small breed so does anyone have any suggestions on what type of milk I can substitute moms milk for??? And how often should I feed them??? Now that I think about it I don't know why he didn't tell me these things, he didn't even tell me how often I can let Sabrina nurse her own pups. Can anyone help??? ps. I might just be paranoid and I plan to take Sabrina to another doctor but four of Sabrina's teats are inverted, I asked the doctor did she have mastisis or could she be developing mastisis and he said no, he said her teats weren't hard so I had nothing to worry about, thing is TO ME THEY DON'T LOOK RIGHT, around the edges of two of them there is what looks like dry peely skin, is that normal??? the vet said it was, and what happens if she does have mastisis and the babies nurse???? |
The Esbilic is the right supplement. it comes in a can like a cream can. You can give it to puppies and mommas both. i never give it to my mommies but i do use a syringe and give it to my babies. Sometimes the mom's milk isn't there as soon as the baby is born and you need to give it to the puppies until mom has milk. even then, I fed my babies around the clock for about four days then mom has pretty much fed them. Right now, she is trying to wean them so I am supplementing again per my vets instructions. mine are only four weeks old. i don't know about the teats but i would say your vet ought to know. good luck. i hope your gal does great. As far as how often to let the babies nurse, the answer to that is whenever they want to. You just leave all that up to mama. Seems like they nurse, then sleep, then nurse some more. If they are getting enough milk, you may not even have to feed them yourself . If you notice the puppies crying then chances are they are hungry. You might have to make mama lay down and put the pups on thee teats yourself till they get the hang of it. Just watch your mama and see if she is feeding them. Anyway, never ever take a nursing pup away from it'ss mama. When the are born her motherly instincts will take over. I am assuming this is your first litter? |
Yes it is my first and last This pregnancy wasn't planned...in fact I was planning on having Sabrina spayed as soon as she was over her second heat. I did everything I could to keep Sabrina and my boy and my girlfriends dog whom I babysit (he is a yorkie also) away from each other, when Sabrina was in heat I would keep her in a separate room, I only separated them with a safety first fence, it's like a baby fence but somehow she still ended up pregnant. I don't know when exactly it happened but it did and these last few weeks have been the worste weeks of my life. I am worried about everything . My vet says I don't have anything to worry about but it's easier to say, I can't sleep at night watching her, every little grunt or hard breathe she takes I'm jumping up, I think I get about 3 hours sleep a day and it's taking it's toll. I just want this thing to be over, I thought I wanted to be a breeder but my nerves won't allow it, I was actually in the process of buying another girl that I planned to breed but after all I am going through I've changed my mind. I do love dogs, and I am in the perfect situation to start a hobby breeding program maybe one litter every other year, but now I don't think I will be joining the breeding world. I hope everything goes smoothly because I think I might have a nervous breakdown  |
