DO you all agree/believe this? I have read on some yorkie breeders sites "If you over feed your yorkie puppy when getting them home, they could grow bigger then estimated. Is that poppy-cock or what??? I think a puppy is either genetically inclined to be small or larger. I dont think a puppy should ever be limited on food at anytime unless they reach adulthood and become overweight. I think breeders saying that would encourage people to limit food much needed by the puppy. Besides that I dont beleive it for a minute.:confused: |
they used to tell me that too... but i don't believe it ... I think they are going to grow what they have too. Angie:) |

Definitely a bunch of hooey... genetics determines size. Overfeeding results in a chubby puppy, not a larger overall puppy. Had I overfed Ruthie when bringing her home, she wouldn't have grown longer legs or a longer body - she would have just gotten fat! When breeder's are saying this - they should be more concerned about the unhealthy aspect of overfeeding rather than how big/small the dog will be as a result... |
I don't think it sounds so far fetched to me. Obviously if you overfeed them, they would get bigger. Why are so many people overweight and bigger than the average size......because they overeat. Sure it can be genetics but if you eat too much or feed your dog to much it is going to weigh more than it should and that could possibly push it over the standard of 7 lbs. Especially if it was 6 lbs to begin with. That being said I do agree that some breeders use that as an excuse in case the puppies go over, and that way they can blame the new puppy owner. |

That sounds like a Bad Breeder COVER MY OWN BUTT Statement. It common sense that exceeding the normal food intake can cause weight gain - but it shouldnt factor into actual size......but I don't think that statement is there for that reason...it sounds more like someone who has complaints because they misrepresented their yorkies and want to make a blanket statement saying it must be the owners fault they got a larger yorkie. Edited to add - oscarsmom - good post - you're right about what you said ....I agree about overweight dogs being unhealthy - not to mention how hard it is on their hipjoints and legs |

I agree it isnt going to make the puppy larger as far as longer legs, body etc and they may be trying to cover having a larger dog but maybe also letting people know you cant just feed them junk and scraps and not expect a yorkie that would normally weigh 5 lbs to maybe weigh 6. I think the only standard it would put them over on would be the weight, but certainly not size. |
:) THe body structure means alot not just the weight. You may have a very little yorkie and if they are fat they may weigh 6 lbs easy if they are porkers!.....:eek: :D ;) |
I have one that is the same size as the other girls but she is solid. People are shocked when they pick her up. She is 7 lbs but I swear she feel like a pile of bricks. You couldnt tell by looking at her and my arms get tired carrying her anywhere. I think she sneeks the treats after we all go to bed........:D |

We have a rescued foster Yorkie in our meetup group. His owner would only give him a small amount of food so "he would not get too big". Thank god this person gave up the dog. He is now given plenty to eat and is just the sweetest little guy. I think the foster mom is falling for him and may even become the forever mom. |
