This has been on my mind for a long time now, how do you get small babies if the female has to be big? I have read and read but for some reason I dont get it:confused: I am not trying to start anything just curious as to how you get small babies:confused: maybe someone can expalin:D I know why not to breed a small female but how do you get small babies???:D

From what I have seen of a lot of people I know that breed they use a bigger female and a much smaller male. Sometimes you get problems for the male to mount the bigger female so :D they have said and recommended putting big boy on or putting a cushion or phone book:D for him to stand on so he can get where he needs to go....lol.

Can you just get the visual here...lol. It makes me laugh to no end. One breeder I know said that she has to hold her female in place once they join up because at times she would go running and be dragging the little boy behind her like a flag waiving in the wind.

LOL, too funny:D So that is how you get tiny babies..........I never thought of that:D

This is not always the case. You can breed a 5-6 pound bitch to a 3 pound dog and end up with pups that are 8+ pounds full grown. So, it's really not always a guarantee for small puppies.

I really don't think there is ever a guarantee. I just think you should try to breed to standard.

That is one of the way that they try to size down the breed I guess. Most of the breeders I know tend to breed to a smaller male. But you never know with the breed because you can get a throw back that turns out to be a tpot weighing 18 lbs when they are fully grown.

They are all cute anyhow. :D

It has to do with genetics...but you should always breed standard to standard. Just because you breed 2 tiny parents does NOT mean that you're going to get small pups.

Case-in-point...a friend has a 3 lb male. She bred that 3 lb male to her standard size pups. These pups were the largest these bitches have EVER had...6-8 ounces at birth. Needless to say, she was very shocked.

Wow, I see what you mean now, I guess i never thought of anything like that before, makes sense.

Thanks! I think I am getting it, I always wondered but never asked because I always hear bad things when tiny females are bred:D But I was so curious:D

So kind of like humans, my husband and I are both short but our 11 year son is tall:D When I say tall I mean he is almost my hsubands size :DMaybe because we have tall relatives:rolleyes: This is how I explained it to my husband :D

You really do have to look back on the past 3+ generations to see how big the grands and great-grands were. Not just at the 2 currently being bred.

From what I've learned from my breeder friends, you just really never what you're going to get. Sometimes as puppies even, you think they will be small then have a huge growth spurt or they just stop growing early. I've heard of standard yorkies making super tiny babies and extra large.

It's like estimating the full grown size of a puppy, educated guessing! You look at the relatives and what has been produced in the lines and then guesstimate what you might end up with. The more experienced breeders are much better at it and are far more consistant in their predictions!
