Question about small pup Got a little scare
 

We had a very small pup in the litter last night and he's had a little bit of a hard time latching on to mama so I was trying to suppliment and feed the pup..... well it seemed to be going well and then when I just went to put her back with mama ...
She was being Very rough with her...It even seemed to me like she wanted to Chew on her OMG I'm scared now...I may just be over reacting, but I have to ask...Is this common? Could she really have wanted to do something to her? Should I stop trying to feed the pup I don't want mama to hurt her. I have kept trying to help her latch on all day , but she's so small the others knock her off and then when I try to get her to eat alone I can't get her to latch on good.

I don''t have any advice, I just wanted to BUMP this up so a YT breeder could see it. I hope your little girl is okay:)

to ween out the sickly pups........I think I would supplement her, and never leave her alone with Mom......sorry...JMHO

I would be pressed (if Mom seems to be rejecting) to supplement most of the time and possibly move the baby to a seperate location with a heating pad until it is stronger but that may not be the best advice, just what I would try.
Moms are known to push a weak puppy out of the nest...thinking they have survival problems.

I didn't notice her doing anything until just this last time I fed the pup...I was thinking she didn't like the fact that I had the pup...my smell on it or something...I'm worried now.

I moved the pup away from her after that and she was trying to jump out of the pen to get to it...Oh boy :confused: :confused: Now I'm leary to feed the pup again and put her back...worried Mama will try to do something again.. She's sleeping right now...

Should I make sure that she doesn't see me with the pup and keep it totally away from her? I will surely call the vet tomorrow, but I am hoping someone here has dealt with this type of issue.

I only have 1 heating pad that is in the pen with all of them....crap...I don't want her being cold make her sick when I think she is actually still doing good. :(

Oh my gosh! I have no clue, but I did read here (I think) that you are supposed to touch ALL of the pups so she gets used to your smell on all of them, and it's not just one that smells "off" to her. But I could be wrong.

I guess you won't be able to leave the puppy alone with her:( I hope someone that knows what they're talking about comes along soon to help.

I'm NO BREEDER !! Rembember that lol - BUT - I've read sometimes a mom will reject a weaker puppy and concentrate on the stronger ones.... so YES I would think you need to step in and make sure she eats -

another thing I've read is they rotate the puppies and give the smallest more time with mom - you may need to be right there with her and maybe mom will come around when the baby gets stronger ??

When the real breeders come on you'll get much better advice !!

I had to supplement all of mine for about three days and nights. I fed every two hours and weighed twice a day. Then as they started gaining good, I only supplemented the three smaller ones. Thee first day or so when I picked them up and put them back with mama, she would get them in her mouth and move them to where she wanted them. I was afraid she was eating them. Not so, she was trying to protect them from me and gather them under her like a mother hen. Now, I only have one that I supplement once a day if needed. I go by the weights twice a day. if one stays the same or loses, it gets supplemented. yesterday I only had one to feed. I try to notice and sometimes i will take my big guy off thee teat and put the runt on the fullest teat and put him back to one of the smaller teats. I don't do this every time because even tho he is large, he still needs to eat same as the others. I have the same problem you do with the smallest ones being pushed off. You just have to pay close attention to them. I hope you went yesterday and bought a scale. I use a postal scale that goes up to five pounds and reads lbs and ounces. I got it t Office Depot for about thirty dollars. It is essential you have a scale.

How are the babies doing and especially the littlest one ???
