Had Litter tonight...few questions
 

Litter of 5 born tonight...Wondering about getting all the pups to latch on...worried they aren't all getting to eat...Any helpful hints on what I could do...Or do I just leave them alone for right now.

Oh man I can't get to the store right now to buy the stuff there...just wondering if there is a "home remedy" type recipe I could try. I'm worried about them all not getting enough through the night.UGGGGG why didn't I take note to this before she had the pups :( :( :confused:

How old are the pups now, how many hours? Is mom staying with them? First colostrum is important but if they were just born give them just a little time to adjust and mom to settle down with them. There are many experienced breeders here who will chime in I am sure. Are they attempting to nurse at all? I had the same concerns the first litter, they will get the hang of it. You don't want to rush right away and give them formula, they need the colostrum! Are they active?

First was born 11:32...last 2:18
Mom is with them...they are all trying to get a good hold and latch on I just can't tell if they all are or not...I feel like a nut....I'm worrying already..They all seem to be active and making noise as well.

You're not a nut!!!:p I feel the same way!! And the worrying never stops, you just get moments where you get to breathe once and a while and then you go right back to worrying:D If they are all active and trying to get a good hold that is good. Will mom let them be, meaning will she lay there and let them try to get a nipple? They're not constantly crying right? Do you have them somewhere nice and quiet where you can maybe just sit or lay near them and watch them to give them a little privacy while still being able to moniter what's going on? I am sure you are exhausted as well!!

By the way...Congratulations!! Do you have weights on them? And what do you have there...girls...boys?:D

Congratulations on the nice litter. I had problems getting my little ones to latch on too. Gently open their mouths andd close them over thee teat. They will get the hang of it before you know it. My only problem now at two weeeks old is that my big guy keeps knocking the tiny ones off when he iss pushing with his little. Another concern you should have right now is your momma. With such a huge litter, she will need a calcuim supplement. You need to take her to the vet in the next day or so for a post whelp exam and a shot of oxxy to clean her out. Ask him for a calcuim supplement. Also continuee to feed her puppy food several times a day. I also mix aa tablespooon of cottage cheese in the morning meal of wet food for calcuim. Then a couple of times a day, I give her this special pudding. It helps her milk to come down. Can you tell if she has milk? If not, go to the liquer store and buy a bottlee of dark beer. Give momma a teaspoon of it and drink the rest yourself. You need it but I was just joking. Give moma a teaspoon of it. It helps her milk come in. One time is all that you give it to her. Here is the pudding recipe I got from a well knowwn breeder. It is much easieer to makee than some others.
Pudding
One large box of vanilla pudding and pie mix (the kind you cook)
4 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
4 egg yolks (beaten)
Cook slowly until it thickens. Takes about an hour or so to cook it. It will not be real thick. Give her aboput a tablespooon a couple of times a day. This is calcuim rich and helps her milk come down goood too. Good luck

They were all moving well and mama was laying there letting them do as the please...Only short cries off and on during the rest of the night. We were the only ones up so we had the livingroom to ourself...They were in the pack n play and I had it pulled up to the couch which I slept on.

Yes she has milk and I have tried what you suggested....it seems to be working but the wee little one keeps falling off poor thing
My gal has all but refused her dog food this past month I have been feeding her chicken and eggs in between bugging and bugging her to eat her food. I'm gonna try that cottage cheese for sure.

You can try to squeze the teets so there is a drop of milk on them and then try to latch puppy on yourself. Once they start sucking, they usually get the hang of it really quick. But keep watching the little ones. Good luck. Prayers are with you. Keep posting for help!!:)

Ok did the squeeze last night...they were sucking but just didn't stay there long...and the smallest one just keeps falling off or getting layed on :(

I read this during my research and tried it and it actualy worked. it sounds weird, but......

Take some of your own saliva and rub it on her nipple and the little one will grab it better. I know it sounds weird, but it did work for me.

You also need to try to get her to eat puppy food. If all else fails, get some LIL Cesear's puppy food. it is in a little pink container. They usually go wild over it. I feed it to all mine every morning. One little square. Some on here don't like it and there are better food but they will eat it when they won't eat anything else. Mix the cottage cheese in it only once a day.

Be sure the little pup eats first if they're pushing her off. Wanna make sure she's getting the the colostrum also.

Congrats! If all else fails moms will usually drink some formula while lying with their pups.

I'm so sorry! Try not to blame yourself or the mom. Sometimes they're just not meant to stay in this world. There was probably something wrong in it's little body, better to pass now than to suffer later. Hope the rest are doing well. :( :(

Figured I would post a little update...There are pics in the nursery and They all have the FIRST vet apointment tomorrow...:( :( I have to work so Hubby is taking them alone :(

Is that to get the tails and dew claws done? I'm gonna go look at their pics :)
