How old should a puppy be when a breeder ships or has a puppy picked up by the new family? I think I found a breeder, she sends her pups to their new homes at 6 weeks, is that okay? |
In my opinion, 6 weeks is toooo young! Needs more time with mom and litter mates. I got first yorkie at 11 weeks, 2nd at 8 weeks. I also think the younger the puppy, the more work for you. I would definately not have a 6 week old puppy shipped. My 2 cents. |
Thanks for your 2 cents, I appreciate the advice. I went back to check the breeders site to make sure that it was 6 weeks because I've looked at hundreds of websites. The breeders says "6 or 7 weeks", I think I'll ask if the puppy could stay there until eight weeks. I'll be driving to pick up the pup so he/she won't be shipped. |
Depends..... On How Fast The Breeder Works With The Dog. I Recieved My Puppy At 6 Weeks And 3 Days And He Is As Healthy As Can Be.he Is Now 10 Weeks And I'm Getting Him A Mate. She'll Only Be 5 Weeks When I Recieve Her. I Checked With The Vet And They Said She Should Be Okay To Travel, But Dont Get The Shots Till 6 Weeks. I'm Getting My Puppy At 5 Weeks Because I Will Be Leaving At The End Of This Week To Head To Las Vegas From Louisiana For Good, And I Already Put A $500 Down Payment On Her. She's Healthy She's Already Starting To Eat On Her Own, And Since The Breeder Knows I Intend To Take Her Home With Me Earlier Than The 6 Weeks She Wanted To Wait, She Said She'll Work With Her Extra So She'll Be On The Dry Food, And Showing Me What To Do So Her Blood Sugar Doesn't Drop. Depends On If Your Breeder Knows How To Work With Them. Take Care. I Got My Male Like I Said At 6 Weeks And I Bought Him In Virginia, And Drove The Next Day To Come To Louisiana. Alright Take Care. I'm sorry but 5-6 weeks is way to young IMO to leave its mother. They don't even have all, if any teeth yet. In some states its not even legal. IMO breeders who let pups go at 6 weeks are just to lazy (they take lots of time and cleaning up after) and cheep to care for them properly. Pups should be 10-12 weeks. I still have 14 week olds that I am just now letting go and 1 that is tiny that will be here probably another month or longer. |
airlines will not take a puppy under 8 weeks old...as well there are many states dont allow the sell of a pup before 8 weeks. For a baby to leave @ 5-6 weeks old is way too young :( I can't agree with a breeder selling them earlier than 10 weeks ever! 5-6 weeks is not working with them early "it is get em out of the nest and sold" These are such little babies they need to be nurtured, socialized and immunized! Most reputable breeders begin weaning about 4 weeks, completely @ 5 weeks or so and shots begin @ 6 weeks. Babies leave @ 12 weeks with two shots and a weighing over two pounds, any weighing less stay longer.... |

Would you believe I found another breeder in my state and she too sends her puppies home at 6 weeks :( 7 weeks if they are really small. Maybe I should give up and buy a goldfish :eek: I'm joking of course, but I really am starting to wonder if there are any "good" breeders around here. I did find a cute Yorkie mix on Petfinder.com but I didn't bother to fill out an adoption application because all your pets must be altered and my husbands Mastiff came from a show breeder and our conrtact gives her rights to one stud service until he reaches age two and he isn't even one year old yet. |
I think the law (in Texas, not sure about the US) is that the puppies have to be atleast 8 weeks old to be sold. |
6 weeks old is too young to separate a pup from his mother and siblings . |
I agree on 12 weeks. Less chance of hypoglycemia and better able to be on their own away from Mom. All the books I have read, and all the reputable breeders say..12 weeks at the earliest. Then they have should have had some shots as well |
If a breeder of a toy dog is letting it go at six weeks, you should start looking for another breeder. NO Toy dog should be taken from the mom and birth home until minimun weeks, and almost all reputable toy dog breeders will keep them until they are 12 weeks. There is too much chance of them getting stressed from the change so young. Remember, these puppies birth weight is measured in ounces, not pounds. It is much too easy for them to crash from hypoglycemia and even die from it. When I do sell a puppy, I will only sell to someone that will come and pick it up. I absolutly will not ship a toy puppy to anyone. I traveled to get my dogs, and expect someone who wants one from me to come and get it here. |
