OK, back on subject. I have heard of people who breed every heat (which I completely disagree with) and some who breed as you plan on with great success and no problems and then some who breed every other cycle. I myself chose every other cycle because I wanted to make sure Trixie had plenty of time to recover, let loose and be a rowdy dog....not that she wasn't rowdy while prego:rolleyes: .....anyhoo...

I thing the back to back or skip a cycle would differ from dog to dog...depending on the ease of whelp w/ the bitch, time in between cycles, etc. Just ,02 from another 'beginner.':D

Can't wait to see pics of your future pups.:)

I was not directing my questions to Sugan's Mom. I was directing them to anyone that breeds their Yorkies or any breed. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday calling different "breeders" that were advertised , looking for a puppy for someone that had asked me to help them find a companion, a "pet". The people I talked to "loved" their little dogs and had one litter now but if there wasn't what I was looking for, they would have another litter next week, and another in a couple of weeks, etc.etc.. It was pretty disturbing. So again, I'm very sorry for offending any reputable breeders, I was asking these questions in general of people that seem to do a lot of breeding. Please forgive me for asking questions..IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN1

Understandable tegamom1...I only have one breeding female...the other was spayed and never bred, so I will let someone else answer your question.
I just hope you understood why Sugar's Mom (and others) are a little wary of your question. It was just kind of out of the blue and there was a former member who used to ask the same question in the same sort of manner and then imply that NO breeder could possibly care about their dog if they bred him/her yadda yadda yadda.
Nothing personal, it's a valid question I suppose...:)

I think every situation is individual, but generally, I would suggest breed twice, rest once. In all cases though, the female should be in tip top health. I would never breed a C-section again so I can't really comment on that, but would definitely not do two in a row in that situation.

Hypothetically, in the case of one heat cycle per year, I would probably breed every heat cycle.

There is a medical health reasoning behind breeding every heat cycle, but would not recommend it for most and I have never done it (but have considered it). The reasoning is that every time a female goes into heat without being bred she risks developing pyometra so some feel they should be bred every heat, but the reputable breeders who do this stop breeding much younger and spay earlier than those that do 2 on/1 or 2 off.

I am not a breeder, yet but I plan to have my first litter next year. I have done alot of research and will continue to keep doing so. I thought alot about this and I will go with the breeding one cycle, off the next. I feel this gives them a good break. Dogs are pregnant for 63 to 65 days and the puppies will be kept until they are 12 weeks old. So that is 5 months that the mom has to endure the puppies and for her no be bred again in a month or two, I just feel that is not enough of a break. I feel that the breed one cycle off the next cycle is the best way and is best for the dam. JMO

Don't get me wrong because there are alot of people who do start off for the wrong reason and should not be breeding but you are not one of them.

Just my opinion...

Thanks so much for your support. it struck a nerve with me because when i first joined here and was researching and mentioned breeding, another person did the same thing to me and told m I had no business breeding. A huge fight took place on the board and in pm's. We are now on each others ignore lists. She was a rescue person and didn't think anyone should breed. She finally kept at me wanting to know why I wanted to breed. I finally told her it was to pay my credit cards off. LOL. i have a feeling that is what she wanted me to say. Actually, my credit cards are paid off. I have been blasted so many times. i am a very outspoken, opinionated person so I guess a lot of it is my fault. But there are a thousand nice people on here for every nasty one. I have seen so much nastiness on the "For Sale' forum that I have been scared to post my litter but am thinking I will this time and just ignore those that try to start something.

I would say that you have to decide what is best for your bitch according to how often she heats, if C-sections are involved and how many litters your kennel can comfortably handle each year. My question is when is the best age to retire a brood bitch? My kennel is still in the red too and I want an other brood bitch!

The lady I got Silk from retires hers at five and no later than six. I want another brood bitch also but may havee to just keep one of my new puppies.

Well, i wouldn't go as far as to call me "wweell seasoned" since this is only my second litter. But i do have a "well seasoned' hubby that has, as I have already told everyone, over thirty, closer to thirty-five, years of experience breeding his Field Champion Beagles under th kennel name of "Indian Hills kennel. he originated thee Indian Hills line. he was right in thee x-pen with me and kanddy and actually delivered the fat little feet first boy. he was stuck tight and all these other babies behind him.
I will be waiting for your call. Lol

Thanks Lisa, I had Silk spayed after her section so that isn't an issue with me. I also would never breed after a section. My husband has on two or three occasions and it is just another section. When he does that, he retires them. My girls seem to come into heat every nine months. I am going to do breed two then off one. I am having a heck of a time keeping my stud in the crate right now tho. I am taking turns with him and the female. I don't let her feet touch the flooor until he is in the crate.

All you said, ditto, plus it was on my thread. I have the other person you are talking about on my ignore list. So you are saying she isn't a member here anymore? I kind of suspected she might have come back under the name tegamom . That was alwayss her first question: why do you want to breed? Some of those that hadn't watched her attack others fell for it hook, line and sinker. Not this gal, tho.

yorkiegirl2 11-29-2006 06:43 AM

I plan to breed 2.. break 1.
Mine all seem to be on the 6-7 month cycles.

And I might add that all 4 of my females came in to heat this month...

2 of the girls did not breed.

My problem is... that the other 2 females did breed and are due within a few days of each other.
I really hope they don't go on the same day...

Nah, I'm not aware of who you are referring to or the situation. I was talking about someone who IS a former member who used to make the same type comment and accusations with people (myself included sometimes). I just understand where you're coming from is all.
Now, I'm not saying that people asking for advice breeding their 3 pound girl or some of the situations that come up don't warrant a "hey, you shouldn't be doing this" now and then...just the whole, "I love my dog more than you because you breed and I don't" spill got under my skin.

BTW, the babies are BEAUTIFUL!:)

yorkiegirl2 11-29-2006 06:52 AM

Wow ..5 BEAUTIFUL BABIES
Momma did great...Congrats
