rotating puppies?? my female (baby) just had 6 puppies tonight. 3 girls, 3 boys, I'm rotating them so they can all nurse, how often do i do this? every 2 hours, every hour?? never had a litter so big before. I have another female that had a litter a month ago I"m weaning her puppies from her and I thought of putting a couple of puppies on her to see if she will take them, I'm afraid if I leave 6 with baby--:confused: 1 might get squashed or something?? any suggestions? please help. thanks. |
WOW big litter my Daisy came froma litter that big 4 gils and two boys They were all Very helthy and had no probs with mom Although My Daisy did get a broken leg very young. My mom was the breeder she never even knew I found out later because it was broke in the growth plate. Any way good luck I hope all goes well :):) |

My females are just over and just under 5 pounds and have 4 and I have never had to rotate or supplement. With six though, the foster mother is a good idea, but only the real mother can provide the necessary antibodies in the colostrum for the first 24 - 48 hours so don't make a complete switch just yet. I believe when you do rotation it means that you have the three smallest nurse first and then the three largest every three hours (finish with supplementation), but all the pups actually remain with mom all the time. If the foster mother idea doesn't work out or you think you may overload her system, supplement the puppies with Esbilac in addition to nursing. Just remember the more you supplement the less milk Mom will produce (of course, this is the reason you will be supplementing, but don't go overboard). When my Malamute had 9 I was sure she was going to need help, but she took care of all of them without rotation or supplementing. We just weaned them earlier then we would have normally. |
if you foster 2 of the pups with the other mom...dont take them back and forth, leave it up to "Foster mom" to care for them completely...The "foster mom" will raise them as her own... if you remove them constantly theres a possibility both moms will get confused by the smells and chance of rejection! |
I agree with giving them to the foster Mom completely, but just wait 24 - 48 hours so they can benefit from the colostrum from the natural Mom. |

up date... thanks for all the suggestions, I did put 2 pupps on foster after 24 hours. she took just like they were own. all 6 are doing great. I will get pics later when they are about 4 weeks. then you all can see how pretty they are. when they are just a few days you really can't tell much about them. thanks again to everyone. |
