AKC Registered Breeders How do you know if a breeder is AKC registered? A person just having AKC registered dogs does not mean that they are an AKC registered breeder, right? Also, what does it mean to be an AKC registered breeder - meaning, what does the AKC do to ensure the breeder is ethical, reputable etc.? Thanks for your help!! |

Now, if you're talking about an AKC registered kennel name, I can't help you there because I only have 2 dogs and not a kennel. AKC is all about keeping records. They do some inspections but what they are looking for is if the breeder has kept correct records. AKC doesn't care how many dogs a breeder has or the living condition of the dogs. |
I don't think the AKC registers breeders -- just litters and dogs. Could you be thinking of membership in the YTCA? Yorkshire Terrier Club of America? Here is a little about their organization: http://www.ytca.org/about.html |
...i see... I heard that AKC were sticklers for paperwork - disapointing, but nevertheless. Thanks for clearing this up! |
Hi as everyone indicating here, AKC does not register their breeders. For breeders in the US to register their kennel name, they have to have 5 champions first that they bred and got the titles on AKC. In Canada, we are different. We can join the Canadian Kennel Club, pay the annual fee to be a member, we get cheaper registration fees etc than non members. But that doesn't verify a reputable breeder as anyone can be a member until they get caught breaking the rules and eventually can be suspended. So, it still boils down to being careful and screening that you are dealing with someone ethical regardless of their claims, it is up to you to discern whether or not they are. |

Thanks Lorraine. I didn't know that either. |
Akc Lorraine...it is 5 litters, not 5 champions. A breeder must have bred 5 AKC litters in 5 years or owned a stud/studs that have produced 40 litters in 10 yrs. and..it has to be a name that does not appear in the dictionary..I could never register Primrose... |

LOL Here I joined the Canadian Kennel Club and registered my kennel name with the CKC before I had the first litter on the ground. I don't think they care if it is a word in the dictionary as long as it isn't the same as someone else has already registered. A registered kennel name can be recycled if the owner hasn't used it, I believe in a certain number of years, ie not registered a litter or shown a dog in I think it is 5 years but could be 10. But if you finish 5 champions with your kennel name you can apply for pemanent registration of your kennel name which can never be used again by anyone even if you die. You can transfer it to a designated person but otherwise it is permanently retired with you. |
Akc They give a list of the rules on the AKC web site for registering a kennel. I don't know how percise they are for sticking to the rules..such as the name not being in the dictionary...they say they want it to be unique. I do know they bend the rules in other cases..like using more letters for a name then spaces..I have done that many times... |
