Inbread Purebreads Someone told me that most purebreads are inbread to some extent (they said it was ok to skip a generation). Could someone please give me some info on this. |
Professional show breeders will do some line breeding to increse their chances of getting the desired traits. It is done, but should be left to those who know what they are doing. It is necessary to know all the ancestors in the line to avoid getting negative traits. From what I understand IN breeding is mother to son, father to daughter sister to brother. line breeding skips a generation |

My husband has "linebred' his champion beagles for about thirty-five years. no inbreeding. that is completely different and should not be done but line breeding is okay. We started (and still own) the Indian Hills line of Beagles. i know my yorkies have all been linebred fromthe Judabob line. mine all came from different places( except my two Judabob gals that karen had bought straight from the Judabob Kennels in Florida) but all have lots of Judabob and a lot of the same names show up on the pedigrees |

You must have very good quality and very healthy lines to inbreed several generations back and even then it is too risky in my opinion. Many health problems have to be on both the mother and the father's side to become reality in a puppy. That is why two healthy parents can produce a genetic health problem that neither has. If you breed two dogs from the same line then you have the same genetic health problems in both and have a very good chance of the problems appearing in the puppies. I once read inbreeding described as "not for the faint of heart" and I agree you can have some horrible birth defects materialize. It is true that all purebreds are inbred simply for the fact that way back in the line they originated from the same dogs (just as humans with Adam and Eve). Inbreeding is when you breed a father/daughter, uncle/niece, grandfather/granddaughter, 2nd cousins, etc. - what we call incest in humans. It becomes line breeding when they are less close in relation, but many breeders draw this line at different places. |
Just for the record I was asking because someone told me this and I wanted to see if it was true. I have no intention of doing this. I don't see how linebreeding could be a good thing and for the good of the breed. I read that this can cause some serious health problems. Why is it ok for dogs but not for humans??? |
I am glad you are not considering this. I only know of one inbred puppy personally and although she does seem to be healthy and has all of her fingers and toes so to speak she seems to be mentally disabled, very hyper and is still not potty trained at almost a year. |
As the previous posters stated it can and will bring out underlining issues. This is from personal experience. I use to cut a family's hair who were gypsies. They marry in the family. They believe that it is wrong to marry outside of the gypsy bloodline. They marry 2nd cousins and had never experienced any birthdefects. Until my client had her sons. They were all born deaf. That is heartbreaking. |

Sorry I was just telling her why it isn't okay for people. As for dogs I will leave that one up to our breeder friends. |
