Roxi goes down again
 
OMG it happened again guys. After spending Monday in the hospital being hypercalcimic and almost losing her, we've been really careful not to let the puppies nurse very much, we've also been giving Roxi calcium suppliments. Now last night we had to rush her over to the vet again bc she was starting to go down hill. She wouldn't eat and was starting to shake allover and her heart was racing. Luckly this time wasn't a bad. Her temp was still normal and her heart wasn't in irrithmea. The injected her with calcium and I got to take her home after a couple of hours.

I just don't get it. I don't even think that she was letting the puppies eat off of her the last couple of days. She is pretty engorged. Now we are weaning the puppies off of her completely (which she's not seeming to mind). Luckly they eat their food and formula pretty good. Roxi is still being a good mommy though. When they do need fed she seems to know and gets us to feed them. At 4:30 this morning she was sitting on our bed barking at us to let us know that it was time to get them something.

Hmmmm...How much does she weigh? I can't remember...is this her first litter? Have you taken her temp....maybe there is an underlying problem, such as an infection. This is just terrible. Let us know if she continues to show improvement now that she won't be nursing much. Is she normally pretty sturdy and healthy? I am asking this in a very caring tone...I'm pretty sure you know that. I am very concerned and hope she gets back to 100%.

wasnt Roxi 4.5lbs and young?? she had 3 pups? I have had ecampsia twice, I never want to see it again. You must limit nursing, once in the morning for a TIMED 3 min again at noon and again late night...you will have to suppliment the other times...dont let mom in at all unless supervised for feeding or wrapped (an ace bandage works well with a onesie over it) making sure pups cant get to the teats. This is very serious, for her to go down a second time means see was still nursing too long and hadnt bounced back. Most vets advise to NOT NURSE at all for the health of your mom.

Oh what a good momma. I hope she gets stabilized soon. Do you feed her puppy food? I've heard that you're supposed to feed nursing mothers puppy food.

Yeah before the puppies she was 4.5lb. Since then she has stayed right at 5 lb. And she is 19 mo. This was her third heat. She isn't running a temp and doesn't show any symptoms most of the time. After the first time I took her, we really cut back her nursing (we brought her home Tues.). then Thurs she would nurse at all, same with friday. So the pups are completely weaned off of her. Since they hadn't eaten from her those two days I figured we would be in the clear. She does like to watch them eat and clean their faces when they are done. But if one starts to go for the teat she runs away, she wants nothing to do with feeding them at all. I feel so bad bc she is so engorged. Any advice on how to comfort her. I know she has to be uncomfortable.

Yes we feed puppy food and cottage cheese

Definitely wrap her teats tightly (not too tightly) with ace bandage. If you don't, they will continue to fill up. Normally, I would mind feed one more time to empty, but I realize that may not be best in your case. Good luck, Glad Roxi is okay.

She's definetly old enough. Have you taken her temp? Has the vet? How is she tonight? I feel bad about her being engorged also. I know you have to watch she doesn't get mastitis (sp?). I'll do a search on google and see if there is anything I can find that might be helpful.

no temp and acting good tonight. I think I'll give her a warm bath. That always helped me feel better when I was engorged:D Here are some pics of babies with milk mustashes

Sorry to hear that,but good that they are eating and can get along without her milk. Her body just could not level off and keep up with the calcium.And she is small with pups too much of a drain on her.My 5 pounder had eclampsia also ,with 2 babies.We brought home calcium and had to inject it under the skin for a day before she leveld off and could handle it.(with not letting them nurse much either I think it was 4 times a day and not for very long).Do not inject anything though unless by your vets advise for they can die from too many calcium injections,even under the skin my vet said.
They are adorable pups!

Gracie had eclampsia once and it's something I'll never forget. I had to get up every 4 hours round the clock to feed the babies. Luckily, since I live just a couple of blocks from where I work, my boss is very understanding and let me go home for feedings through out the day.

I let Gracie nurse twice a day and kept her bandaged and out of the ex pen the rest of the time. I not only fed the pups, but I peed/pooped them as well.

Rox is feeling so much better and acting like her self again. When I was out feeding horses yesterday one of the kids let her in with the babies, and she did feed them, but she was so engorged that I figured it couldn't hurt. Now she hasn't filled up near as much, I'm sure she's more comfortable.

The puppies are starting to become really playful. And attack everything. Titan (daddy) is really liking it. He comes in and lets the puppies attack him and play on him. I'm surprised how good he is with them. Here is a pic of one of them biting Titan's leg
