Breeding Dilemma Ollie is in heat now, she's 10 months old. Her next heat should be in April, right? Is the 6 month rule pretty accurate, or does it vary? Here is the dilemma, if I breed her in April, she will be due in June. My niece is getting married in June. The wedding is 6 hours away. I really don't want to miss this breeding, but I don't want to miss the wedding either. Have any of you ever encountered this problem? What did you do? Either she will be very close to due, or the puppies will be brand new. Should I plan to board her at the vets? Would the stress of that cause her to whelp early? Is traveling with her even an option? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. |

Don't travel with her. Now, since this is only going to be her 2nd heat, she may go 7-8 months out from the first. Mine did. But obviously you will need to have a plan in place, just in case. Do you have a friend that is knowledgable about the whelping process, and that you trust to put you baby into his/her hands? That would be the BEST option, in my opinion. |

Maybe you could just wait to breed her until the next heat after April? What if complications arise? Or she needs special care? I think it's best to wait until you can be there for her for sure and can make sure everything's going well. |
Would never consider boarding a pregnant Mom. They really need you at this time. Six months is just an average. I have seen 5 months between heats and also 9 and 10 months. If she is one that goes in and out every six months waiting for the next cycle wouldn't be a bad idea because it would be better to breed an almost 2 year old then a 16 month old (in my opinion). |
Thanks for all the input. It gives me a lot to think about. Hopefully she'll either be early or late and I won't have to make a decision. |
just because her first heat is at 10 months doesnt mean her next will be in 6 months....I have various heats with my gals...none heat at 6 months...most are 8-9 months and Mercedes looks like she will be once a year. hope this helps |

Hello, I wouldn't board at a vet clinic unless you could work something special out with them, just think of all the sick dogs coming in to the clinic who she could be exposed to. My little girl is going to be due mid December, and we are going to want to go back home (12 hours) for Christmas. I've got a friend who will babysit for me, but they should be around two weeks old by then. Whitney |
Heats are pretty hard to predict. Saying she will be in in six mo doesn't mean that six months from this day she will go in it is pretty general. I think that you should just wait until the next heat. Then when she goes into heat look at the calander and count out 57 days and if that or falls some time right before the wedding don't breed her. I guess I don't understand why you wouldn't want to wait until the next heat when the timing would be better for you. |
why don't you skip them both and wait until the 3rd time? |
I agree with everyone else. I would skip her second heat. This way, she can mature more. But if you can't commit to being there during whelping and after (which I'm not saying you wouldn't but how often do neices get married?) then wait. Momma dogs can be very clingy during pregnancy and whelping process. |
You've all brought up some very good points, and I am considering waiting till the 3rd heat if the timing isn't right. I'd hate to disappoint my niece, and to miss out on a family affair. I just hope it works out so I don't have to make a cholice. I have no valid reason for not waiting except that I am excited about my first litter. I was just considering all of my options, but I doubt very much that I could leave her, and I wouldn't want to miss it anyway. |
One of my girls has a 5 month cycle. So I agree with the others that they vary with each dog. I hope it all works out for you! |
