Question re Libby and Puppy Poop Libby's puppies are 4 weeks old and doing great. She keeps the puppy playpen pristine! She eats up all their poop. They are getting sooo big...when will she stop? Cuz her poop is SOOO stinky and awful. I don't interfere because she is doing such a great job just want to know if this is still OK at 4 weeks and when she might stop. Thanks! |
I'd look constantly for puppy poop and get it out of there asap before she eats it. It is ok for the first few weeks, but they will be pooping more and more often and it gets to be too much and may make her sick. Trust me, when she gets the runs all through the pen and it is all over the pups, you will be sick. They eat it to "hide evidence" of having pups. It is just their instinct to protect and she doesn't understand that she isn't in the wild and there are no "predators" after her babies. Once you start "collecting" it on your own, hopefully she will get out of the habit of cleaning up so nicely:) . I put a pee pad on one end of the pen and at less than 3 weeks the pups will find their way over there to pee. |
Thanks Julz! The problem is she is feeding them mostly at night. She doesn't do it so much during the day. I guess the MSG won't work for this problem? |

Get this guys...I have one pup left that I'm keeping. She is 14 weeks old, and her mom STILL eats her poo. I have to be quick but sometimes I'm not. I have a piece of linolium down and if she doesn't pee on the wee pad and goes on the linolium she'll lick that up too. |

I can sympathize!!! Same thing going on here. My four pups will be 5 weeks on Sunday. I can't seem to get there faster than Libby to clean up. But it's her poop that stinks to high heaven! And all her potty training went out the window when the pups were born. When the pups go to their new homes, I am going to hire an ARMY to clean my house:):):):) |

Every once in a while I catch her trying to diaper Tahlulah (her daughter) and she's 6 months old....not that Tahlulah minds it. I've had puppys before and although it's always smelly, this week has been just unbearable. Moms "flatulence" was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I'm not sure, but it's been better today, so thru investigation I found that my husband used 3 "whole" eggs in her pudding last time. I made new stuff yesterday and the smell is almost gone. I'm pretty sure now that it was the egg whites that made life around here horrid. It's not a mistake you want to make. :p |

This is really great reading about all this. I have often wondered if mine were the only one's who did this as they got older, LOL! I did have a girl in the past who did this until they were over 12 weeks! I love Mardelin's "diapering". May I use that term in the future? It sounds so much better than "she's still eating their poop" LOL LOL I have 6 1/2 week olds and Mom is not "diapering" them anymore. She's had enough. She nurses a little here and there but they are most definitely enjoying their puppy mush now. As the little teeth continue to come in, I've been mixing a few pieces of kibble in with their soft food. I "think" that when they are strictly nursing, as most of you who have had pups know...the poop has a different smell, almost a "milky" smell in itself. As they get on puppy food, it changes and thats usually when Mom's stop the diapering. Notice I said "usually" LOL Good luck to you and your babes! |
I don't think my Go-Go has any problem with the smell. When she was a pup she'd try and diaper her mother.....I never got upset over it, just made sure I cleaned up before she could get there. I was told and I don't know how true this is, that those that are prone to it usually make good moms...Go-Go is a wonderful mom Absolutely you can use the term diapering....it's a term I picked up from other breeders and it does sount a lot nicer. Either diapering or cleaning their panties. |
