Surprise! I think she is pregnant  I picked Lacy up this eve and I was very surprised to feel a very big belly. I did not feel this last week. I have been sick for about 4 days and have not played with her much but she has been sleeping with me every night and I did not notice anything. She was in heat in early Sept (I think) but my male only has one testicle that has dropped and did not breed her the last 2 times so I just thought he could not. Which is what the vet told me might happen so I did not pay alot of attention to what the date was when she came in to heat. She is spending alot of time in her bed and is very snugly when in bed with me. Is there any way to know how far along she is. Her teats are starting to swell some. I am worried because she is about 2-3 lbs and the male is 4 lbs, so I know she may have to have a c-section. I would call our vet but it is Sat night. Don't want to wait till Monday. Thanks for the help! |
Wow she is really too tiny to be pregnant. Good luck with the whelping |

Welcome to YT, Glad you found this site in time. It will be fine for you to wait until Monday. Take her to your Vet and have him give her a thorough examination and x-rays. He will be able to give you a good idea when she is due. |
I just went through a similar situation, although my girl was 3 1/2 lbs, and the male was 3. My advise is to make sure your vet uses isoflourane and preferably is equipped for laser surgery. (much less painful and heals faster). You can have her spayed at the same time that she has a c-section and it won't effect her milk supply. Personally, I would question the vet you're using if he/she didn't suggest a spay for a monorchid (one testicle) dog, as odds are he will develop cancer in the retained testicle. Plus, it's an inherited trait. I wouldn't even consider letting my girl try to deliver the 2 pups she carried. It's going to cost, but I'm sure your baby means the world to you and you'd never forgive yourself if you lost her. Good luck to you and let us know how it goes. |

You definitely have a lot to discuss with your vet - I've never heard of anyone breeding a 2 pounder and even 3 and 4 pounders are risky. Like someone mentioned, x-rays are not suppose to be done until after Day 50 of pregnancy. I have always read to neuter cryptorchids because the condition is passed on to offspring. I have also heard they are likely to develop testicular cancer. Your vet (or you) should be able to feel little walnut sized bumps if she is pregnant. It's possible that she could be having a false pregnancy and still show all the signs. |
Last night I could feel a puppy moving around, probably 1-1.5 inches long. Will see vet tomorrow. The vet did suggest neutering the male just didn't want to yet. Maybe I need to now that he is 4 yrs old. thanks for all your help. |
If you can feel the puppies moving I would say you are within two weeks of delivery. Here is an article on cryptorchids. http://www.2ndchance.info/cryptorchid.htm |
Well, the vet said she was probably 45-48 days along. We looked back in Jakes records and he checked him again and said that he was a high flanker. It had dropped just stayed up high...thank heavens. He said that he thought she would deliver OK and did not want to do the Csection unless we had to. I guess she had gained some weight since last year because she weighed 4.2 lbs today. He felt at least 2 pups. Will let you know how things come out. Thanks for all your help. :) |

Don't know how much of that 4 pounds is pregnancy weight. Please keep a very close eye on her and never leave her alone until she safely has these babies. I am glad your vet thinks she can deliver naturally and safely, but don't let her stay in active labor for very long without getting a C-section if you need to. Are you planning on delivering the pups yourself? Please keep us updated. |
:) Lacy and male baby are doing fine, He was born 1 week and 1 day ago. Growing like a weed. The female was a little bigger but was still born, had some blood in the sac. :( Lacy had no trouble giving birth. :) Thanks for your help. :aimeeyork |
