Torn.....Sad Decision This is where breeding gets hard. She is oversized at 10 lbs.. I dont like the color of her hair, marbled with blue and silver and I dont like the texture. Its cottony with little shine. It knots easily and it has a some waviness to it. She doesnt have a pretty face. Shes a nice yorkie. Shes very healthy, active and young but she isnt breed standard. Her negative traits outweigh her positive. She has had one litter and I am gonna keep it at that. The puppies are cuties and healthy, but will they have any of these qualities? Its very likely. My husband gets mad at me cause he says "she isnt what you say she is" but she is. He is just attached like me. He is a loyal person. Hard is it is to believe so am I, but Im a breeder and I want to breed the best of the breed. Sounds so mean doesnt it. |
Kelly, you can still love her and have her for a pet! Get her spayed and she can be an "aunt" to the other Yorkies! |
I don't think you sound mean at all. It must be a hard decision to make, but because you shouldn't breed her doesn't make her any less of a wonderful pet :) |
sad It is very hard and many people do not understand how a breeder can place a pet. You did not mention parting with her, but it is the only way I can manage top of the line vet care. I used to keep all my dogs until they went to rainbow bridge. The problem with keeping them all is, they miss out on being a one on one pet...and vet bills can break your bank account. Simple yearly dental cleaning is outrageous if you keep a houseful of retired dogs. I know it must sound heartless to many, but I really want the best for mine, each one I keep needs to be a well thought out decision. I have spay/neutered some wonderful yorkies who just did not produce good quality..it is only fair to the breed we love so much. Best wishes to you.. |
Pat you are a very kind and unselfish person! Thank you for educating me again! You really have a way of putting things in perspective!! |
I, as a non-breeder yorkie BUYER respect you SO much for this decsion. I know it's hard for you, and sad, and sounds mean. But breeding IS about the best of the breed, isn't it? She's a great dog, and that's what matters with her as a pet. There need to be more loving, yet strict and careful, breeders out there like you. :-) |
I know is so hard but I agreed with everyone, you are doing this for the best of the breed. You can still love her. Being spayed doesnt make her any less wonderful. Bless your heart. :aimeeyork |
I'm sure she doesn't have to be a 'working girl' for you to love her. And if you decide she needs to go to a pet only home, good for you for thinking of her welfare. Either way, you are doing the right thing. |
Not mean. But you are truthful with her situation. Glad you see that she really isn't standard and not all are. Those are the ones that shouldn't be bred. If it was one or two things a wonderful male might correct those negatives but it's going to be super hard to correct all those. She is still lovable--I'm sure you will do the right thing either way. I love hearing about responsible yorkie moms. You are one of them! =) |
You have to do what's best for your baby regardless! I think you are making the right decision! I know it's painful but I can't feel that you are mean because you want what's best for her ... I thought that was what being a good Mom was all about?! |
luvorkyyorkies - I think it is so honest of you to show others another side of "breeding"...I can only imagine all the tough choices that must be made by breeders and the tear it puts within their hearts. Bless you for all you do! :p |

Yorkierose knew what I was getting at, she deserves a loving home where she gets what she needs, and have that one on one time. She gets attention but she would be queen yorkie somewhere else if I find the right placement in the future! What yorkierose said in the quote is the hard reality but that reality could be a great choice for my girl. |
Do you ever get calls asking for retired yorkies? I think Pat mentioned this before...when my husband and I start to look for a new pet (in the future) we plan to get on a breeder's waiting list for such a pet...puppyhood is great, but they are only a puppy for so long, and an older, calmer, maybe even housetrained dog would be a welcome addition to many homes...just like mine |
