I bred my female and she isn't pregnant I bred my two year old female yorkie for the first time in August. I couldn't find a suitable stud in my area, so I used Artificial Insemination from a stud in another province. The vet checked the semen sample (the 1st sample was excellent, the second one was not as good). We did progesterone testing and inseminated on appropriate dates. The owner of the stud, and the vet felt that my female would be pregnant - but she isnt. The AI cost a great deal more (with all the added expenses) than I thought it would. I get another try at it, but am reluctant to shell out an additional $500 for shipping, progesterone testing, the insemination process, etc. since I am worried she again will not be pregnant. Should I try natural breeding with her during her next heat b/f using AI again (even though I'm not that keen on the studs in this area?) The vet can't think of anything we could do differently next time as he thinks we inserted the sperm on the perfect days -- should I have any tests done on my female b/f breeding again? Anyone have any ideas as to why she may not have conceived? thanks. |
Yikes -- no replies - now I'm even more concerned. I was hoping that someone could shed some light or at least reassure me that their breeding females have had similar experiences. |
maybe buy yourself a stud instead of sheeling out the money to someone else? |
I know nothing about AI in dogs, but with AI in horses you both sign a contract guaranteeing a life foal (shipping included) the stud must send sperm until a life foal is produced (for some reason I think there is a limit to having many samples they will send). We are having a similar problem our studs sperm isn't shipping very well so we are trying to find a new method so that we don't have to keep shelling out new samples. Sorry I'm not more help. Did you sign a contract? How far away is the stud? If you have to pay that high of a shipping fee finding a stud in your area may be more economical. |
AI isn't fool proof - I am by no means an expert and only know by what I have read and heard from breeders here. But a natural tie with a stud who's nose thinks it's the right date along with the progesterone tests is a good bet. I know that there are many puppies born from AI but like I said nothing is fool proof. I don't know what the more experienced breeders will have to say but I would try hard to see if there is any stone left unturned to find a suitable stud first in a reasonable distance from you. What does your vet say about testing to see if there is a physical problem on the part of your bitch preventing pregnancy? Hope that helped a little and I am sure someone with more knowledge than I will reply at some point.:animal-pa |
Peters: Actually I tried buying a stud (really bad experience -- I wrote about it under Breeder Reviews (Chaffins, Oklahoma) -- in a nutshell the Chaffins lied about the age of the male (i.e. said he was older than he was) and led me to believe the stud would be 2-3 lbs. This male is now an almost 9 lb. yorkie that I have had neutered. I am in Canada and shipped him up. With shipping, etc. I paid over $2000 -- so I'm not having much luck!!! The vet that does the A.I. didn't offer any suggestions other than "Oh, she'll probably get pregnant next time". But perhaps I should visit my regular vet before losing another $500 (on top of the $800 I spent for the semen) -- I'm starting to understand why yorkie puppies can be so expensive. |
There is always the possiblity that she isn't fertile. It does happen. |
JULZ: I already know that one of the possibilites might be that she is infertile, hence, my expression "I'm concerned". I've been looking for other possibilites that I can explore. |
I hope everything works out for you. Sounds like you have been through a lot both emotionally and financially. |
Yes, it hasn't been a great experience. Thanks for your understanding. |
Here's a link to some great sites to further study AI. With AI there has to be so much testing done to predict the correct timing of ovulation and frozen sperm is only viable for a very short time. Was the sperm surgically inserted into the uterus or just the vaginal canal? Was the sperm chilled or frozen? http://www.rebelcreek.com/Reproduction.htm |
Sorry you're having so many problems. I have no solutions or suggestions, I just wanted to wish you luck if you decide to try again. |
Thanks JeanieK. Lacy's Mom: the sperm was chilled sperm and was inserted into the vaginal canal. |
