Questions Re Libby B4 I try to lay my head down for a few winks.... All Libby wants is goat's milk mixed with water. She is not hungry yet. Is this OK? Is it possible to give too much? She has gone out to pee about five times so that is good. Would it be a good plan for me to wake up every two hours tonight to make sure she feeds everybody? I can tell she is really tired. |
Maybe you could try mixing some of the milk with her food? Or some cottage cheese with it? |
Tried Cottage Cheese And she said no way! So am keeping up the goat's milk. She started panting a little bit ago and after I gave her the milk, she stopped. I just don't want her to be dehydrated after such a long and trying day. |
Her appetite will pick up. There is a receipe on here if you do a search to give her after having pups (a knox jello receipe). Her main concern right now will be her new puppies. Don't forget, she ate placentas and that has a lot of protein and stuff in it (yuck, I know). Do a "puppy count" constantly for the first week....they get around a lot and can get caught up in a blanket or under Mamma. |
Puppy Count Can you believe? One of them already got out of her whelping box! I almost had a heart attack. They are a lot stronger than they look! Right now all is quiet. Everybody is sleeping EXCEPT ME!!!! I am so wired from my daughter's wedding and these puppies and my girlfriend's medical problems. |
Told ya!:p It is amazing how MUCH they get around immediately after birth (always try to go back where they came from too). I am so impressed and touched that your friend's husband took on Libby. I try to picture my husband doing it....and it impresses me more and more. Don't count on much sleep tonight (or the next 2 nights)....those pups don't produce body heat for 3 days...they have to get their warmth from Libby. Keep up with those puppy counts, you can see how important they are. |
Julz: We have the heating pad on They feel warm. I have the heating pad on one side of their box so they can choose. Libby stays on the cool side and the pups gravitate to the warm side. I just called the ER vet re the goat's milk. They said not to give her anything but water and puppy food. But she is refusing water, puppy food and cottage cheese! So I blended some puppy food with a wee bit of goat's milk and she ate it! She is no longer breathing so fast. I really think the goat's milk is OK. I dilute it with water and every time I give it her breathing slows down. I think I am going to go on my intuition on this. |
Yes, I remember being shocked at how quickly they got out of the whelping box we had as well. They were in our bathroom, so them getting out and on the cold floor was a concern!:( (It was mid-Oct) When they were about a week old, we moved them to a small kiddie pool in a pinch, which worked great! (another breeder I'd worked w/ suggested this) Hubby actually built a wonderful box for this time around...3 x 3, 10 in high, removable bottom and covered in slightly cushioned vinyl so the whole thing can be easily hosed off! He even got a tan-ish colored vinyl because "it matches the dogs." |
