Whelping box Another question. I was also wondering what most people use after whelping, or same box or what. I was going to use the bottom of a dog crate once she is all done and puppies are here. But I can't find it and just asking my husband and he threw it away! I'm just looking for ideas. I have some other ideas, but...want to see what most people do. This is my first litter. I am very excited and scared at the same time. Thanks!!:) :D |

I used a large crate. I lined the inside with cardboard so that when puppies started roaming they would get caught in the between the slats. I then put a sheepskin type on the floor and a bed. The crate opened out into an x-pen so that Emilee could go on the pee pads and eat. The crate door was shut at night and when we were not home so that she wouldn't try to find another place for her puppies. As far as I was concerned it was a perfect set up for us. |
this is what I did (but I am not a breeder). before Ahia had her pups I wanted everything to be ready. so I bought some PVC pipes and all the joints. I didn't even glue it all together so i could easily tear it down when I was finished with it. I just joined 4 pieces to make a big square. I made 2 of these. I got the 3 way joints and added 4 post, one in each corner, to make a free standing fence. It all sat on a new piece of left over carpet which the installers had left for me. It ended up being a 3' X 3' pen. I lined it with newspapers and drapped sheets/blankets over the sides. It didn't get messy during delivery because I would remove layers as needed. this also doubled as a x-pen for the puppies until they grew out of it. I made it about 1 1/2' tall so Ahia could jump in and out but the pups couldn't. PVC is so cheap and I was looking for a temperary multi use method. I don't know if this would help you or not. |
I use the dog litter box also... before and after... I have it in an xpen... in the corner... the lower part against the back side... Once the pups start climbing/falling out... I turn it around so the lower side is away from the back panel.... The pee pads are on the opposite side of the xpen. The dog litter box is easy to clean when they make their messes!!! :Pawprint: |
